- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical
The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction. They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]
Observation. LO observed the following areas requiring addressing with a plan by above date and a long term plan to ensure ongoing compliance. This includes - step stools in bathrooms required deep cleaning or replacement, latches on cupboards are broken and should be taken off or replaced (as long as there are no hazardous items accessible to children within these cupboard, latches may not be required), chips and marks on walls required repair and /or deep cleaning and carpets are torn at edges with curling that could be a tripping hazard, but they are also showing staining which means they cannot be appropriately cleaned.
- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical
All indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are suitable for the age and development of the children, safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair. [CCLR Sec. 16(4)]
Observation. The outdoor space appears to be clean and well organized. There are a few items stored beside the stairs in one of the space that appears to be broken or not used. There are also painted tires that child enjoyed playing with. All non-usable / broken equipment should be removed immediately. The tires have pooled water inside the rim, LO recommends that the facility drill holes into the tires so that there is no standing water which could be hazardous for children.
- STAFFING / Character and skill requirementsNon-critical
Employees are of good character, have the personality, ability and temperament necessary to work with children, have the training and experience and demonstrate the skills necessary to carry out the duties assigned. [CCLR Sec 19(2)]
Observation. While LO observed each room engaged in various activities with children. LO also observed 2 children who appeared sad, one of the children appeared to have staff support, while the other children appeared to be sitting independently at an activity that they were not engaged with. During this time, staff were focused on preparing upcoming activities rather than being actively engaged with the children present. As a result, some children—particularly those who were unfamiliar with the setting and peers—were left without adult interaction, reassurance, or emotional support. LO also observed an incident where it appeared that staff was frustrated with a child who was following other children's lead and put their boots on while in line. It appeared that half the children were wearing boots at this time, yet this was the only child who was singled out and told not to put their boots on. As staff work in teams, it is important that they support each other as well as ensure that they are all modeling positive practices.
