  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During inspection licensing observed: -There is wear and tear throughout the classrooms and bathrooms, with chipped paint exposing drywall at children’s level, resulting in uneven surfaces that may be difficult to clean and sanitize. - In one infant & toddler program (classroom B) there were small wires protuding from underneath the heat vent that were within children reach. - In one infant & toddler program (classroom C) a metal toilet roll holder was rusted in some areas. Manager said it is not used and will remove it. - Lower edges of the storage cabinet in classroom C were chipped and had sharp edges, posing a potential injury risk to children. - The surfaces of some children wooden tables, toy shelves, and crib handrails were worn, exposing material underneath;making them difficult to clean and sanitize effectively. - In classroom B four playpens had ripped mesh netting.

    Corrective action. The manager took photos of the above observations and said she will provide Licensing with a plan to address them.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. During inspection Licensing observed: -In two infant and toddler classrooms, baskets containing items such as paint bottles, books, small metal cars, and toys were stored on wall-mounted shelves. Some baskets were oversized for the shelving unit, making the items unstable and potentially posing a risk of falling onto children. - In one infant classroom, a diaper cream and an unlabeled spray bottle were stored on the sink where children wash their hands, making them accessible. The manager was unaware of the spray bottle’s contents. -The fridge in 4 classrooms measured above 8°C. The manager lowered the temperature during the inspection. -In the 3-5 program bathroom, diaper creams were stored at child level, making them accessible. Staff removed them during the inspection.

    Corrective action. Manager said these items will be addressed.

    Observation. One child's emeregncy medication was expired. This is repeat violation from previous inspection.

    Corrective action. Manager said that parent will be asked today to provide unexpired medication.

    Observation. Files for 10 children were reviewed. Emergency contact information was not available for 1 child.

    Observation. Five staff files were reviewed. One staff member was missing a Criminal Record Check (CRC) clearance letter through the Criminal Record Review Program; instead an RCMP clearance letter was on file and two staff members had valid CRCs, but they were not addressed to this facility.

    Corrective action. Manager said CRC applications for staff members will be submitted to Criminal Record Review Program.

    Observation. One staff member did not have a criminal record clearance (CRC) letter from the criminal record review program (CRRP). They had one from the RCMP.

    Corrective action. The Manager will provide the staff with the application to complete the CRC from the CRRP.

    A licensee, other than a licensee who provides a care program described as Family Child Care or Child-minding, must have for each child at least 3.7 m2 of usable floor area in the community care facility, excluding (a) hallways, (b) built in storage areas, (c) bathrooms, and (d) fixed appliances, or, if not fixed, large appliances that are not normally moved from one area to another.

    Observation. Upon inspection, Licensing observed one of the programs had restricted access to usable floor space. The Manager explained a barrier was added so children will not go near the door.

    Corrective action. Please ensure at least 3.7 m2 of usable floor area is available for each child.

Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): The facility has a live stream feed of the classrooms available to registered families. The bathroom interior in the Group Child Care (30 months to school age) is visible on the live stream. Being able to view into the bathroom does not protect the dignity of the children.

    Corrective action. Please ensure bathrooms are not visible on the live stream feed.

    Observation. The following were observed during the inspection in the Group Child Care (under 36 months) program: A floor fan is in the nap room. The fan is not stable and could fall on a child. A rug in the play room easily moves and poses a tripping hazard. A toilet puck is accessible to children.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that the fan does not pose a risk to the children, that the toilet puck is not accessible to children and that the rug does not pose a tripping hazard.

    Observation. The fridge in the Group Child Care (under 36 months) was 5c and the fridge in the Group Child Care (30 months to school age) was 7.5c. The manager stated that as both fridges are located in the direct sunlight this may have an effect on the temperatures.

    Corrective action. Please make sure fridge temperatures are between 0-4c.
