    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Outdoor play area ·Barrier at the bottom of the staircase was not sturdy and was not in place ·Overgrown plants and vines; manager to check if ivy plants within children’s reach are common allergens ·Build-up of green mildew on outdoor toys; some plastic toys were broken ·Rust build-up on metal pedals of two ride-on toys and on bottom bolts of deck poles within children’s reach; metal paint brush submerged in children water table was visibly rusted. ·Rotten wooden log along one metal fence exposed nails ·Metal clamp at base of wooden deck posts had sharp edges, creating a potential injury risk ·Unravelled hose and a loose brick presented a tripping/injury risk Indoors ·Fridge temperature measured at 8.7 °C; manager lowered temperature during inspection

    Corrective action. Manager said Licensing will be provided with a plan to address the above items.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed that part of the wooden base of the stairs outdoors was chipped. Licensing is recommending that a professional assessment is done to ensure stability of the structure.

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. The following was observed: > The fire extinguisher required to be serviced this year in April. > There was insufficient water in the emergency supplies.

    Corrective action. The Licensee said that she will obtain more water and will have the fire extinguisher serviced.

    Observation. There was no record of criminal record check clearance letters (CRC) for individuals living in the home.

    Corrective action. Please ensure CRC's are obtained for any individual living in the home who is 12 years and older.

    Observation. There was no record of the Licensee's CRC clearance letter from the Criminal Record Review Program (CRRP). The Licensee has one from the RCMP.

    Corrective action. The Licensee advised she will apply for a CRC through the CRRP.

    Observation. Upon inspection, Licensing observed: -Exposed gyprock in the main play area. -Depth and adequacy of protective surfacing is insufficient where the outdoor slide is located.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that furniture, equipment and fixtures are clean and in good repair.

    Observation. Upon inspection, Licensing found that emergency supplies are insufficient as many items have expired. The Manager was unaware these items had expired.

    A licensee, other than a licensee who provides a care program described as Family Child Care or Child-minding, must have for each child at least 3.7 m2 of usable floor area in the community care facility, excluding (a) hallways, (b) built in storage areas, (c) bathrooms, and (d) fixed appliances, or, if not fixed, large appliances that are not normally moved from one area to another.

    Observation. During inspection, Licensing observed usable floor space in the community care facility is being used for storage of toys. Staff said this space has been inaccessible to children for a week, and they are in transition of switching toys for children.

    Corrective action. Ensure usable floor area is accessible to children

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. During inspection, Licensing observed: -Diaper cream accessible to children in the bathroom. Staff said the children were changed prior to going to play outdoors and the diaper cream is typically stored away in the drawer with a secure lock. Staff corrected this upon inspection. -A lawn mower was stored and accessible to children in the outdoor play area. Staff stated this is not the typical storage space for it.

    Corrective action. Ensure children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety

    Observation. During inspection, Licensing observed a child who was exhibiting challenging behaviours be put in a high chair by the staff as a form of guidance. Manager said this is not common practice when guiding children through challenging behaviours.

    Corrective action. Ensure that behaviour guidance is appropriate to the age and development of the child who is receiving the guidance.

    Observation. During review of monthly recorded fire drills, it was found that 2 months were not recorded completed. The manager explained that they were not practiced when only 1 or 2 children were in attendance.

    Corrective action. Ensure fire drills are practiced and recorded monthly when any children are in attendance at the facility.
