    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (b) readily accessible to employees.

    Observation. Expired emergency medication for a child with an allergy. As per the Manager, she has requested current medication from the parents.

    Corrective action. The Manager will follow up with the parents to obtain current medication.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. Licensing observed a bottle of cleaner located in the children's designated washroom. As per the Manager, she will speak to the cleaners in regard to storing the bottle of cleaner in another location.

    Corrective action. Please ensure hazardous substances/objects are not accessible to children.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (h) any special instruction respecting the child's diet, medication, participation in a program of activities, or other matter relevant to the child's care, (i) given by the child's parent to the licensee in writing.

    Observation. Licensing noted there is a child with an allergy, but there are no instructions relating to symptoms to watch for and/or follow-up action to follow in the case that the child comes into contact with the allergen.

    Corrective action. Please ensure written instructions are obtained by the child's parent regarding the allergy and symptoms.

    Observation. The centre uses a staff qualifications list as staff files are held at the head office. Licensing reviewed the staff qualifications list and noted that it was not updated with current staff and their qualifications/documents. The list displayed a previous staff and the current Manager's qualifications/documents. As per the Manager, she has already asked for a copy of an updated list.

    Corrective action. Please ensure an updated staff qualifications list is obtained and posted that includes all current staff of the centre.

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. During the routine inspection it was noted that the emergency preparedness kit did not contain any water and food. The manager stated that the facility has food in a cupboard and the food is to be used daily for the purpose of serving snack.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that you have enough food and water to prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. During the review of staff files, it was noted that two staff had all their records present on a spread sheet. One staff did not have a file at the facility. Manager stated that the staff was a substitute teacher and their file is at the head office.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that all staff have a file on site.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing saw a coffee pot being stored on top of the fridge with the cord hanging down. There is the potential for the coffee pot to fall off and injure an individual. In the washroom Licensing saw a bucket of cleaning supplies and equipment on the floor in the children's washroom. Licensing also noted this room is being used to store cleaning equipment. There is a change table, used by community partners, and there were potty chairs, towels and clothing hanging off.

    Corrective action. The above noted items need to be addressed in a manner that ensures the facility is safe. Licensing understands when more than one group uses the same space it the potential for misinformation. The observations noted here apply to children of all ages.

    A licensee must keep current records of each of the following: (c) a record respecting compliance with section 22 (2) (b) and (c) [emergency training and equipment].

    Observation. Posted in the facility is the monthly fire drills. There were no entries for December 2019 or January 2020. In discussion with the Manager she said the fire drills were done but not recorded.

    Corrective action. Ensure monthly fire drills and annual emergency drills are recorded after completion.
