  • C7.1 - Is the facility safe, sanitary, free from hazards, in good repair, and appropriate for the age and development of children?Non-critical

    Observation. Licensing received an allegation to Section 13 of the Child Care Licensing Regulation that the Licensee is providing an unsafe environment to children. It was alleged that the swimming pool gate is unsecured and accessible to children while they were in care. Based on the information received during this complaint follow-up, Licensing has determined the allegation to be substantiated. Ensure that the swimming pool is secured and that children do not have any access to it during the facility's operating hours. Licensing received an allegation to Section 15 (1) (b) of the Child Care Licensing Regulation. The complainant has expressed concerns that the facility's emergency exit may be blocked. At the time of inspection, Licensing observed that a boat and truck were parked on the driveway. However, these do not appear to block the exit in case of an emergency. Licensing has determined the allegation to be unsubstantiated. Licensing received an allegation to Section 17 of the Child Care Licensing Regulation. It has been alleged that a fire that has occurred in the Licensee's garage - posing a risk to children's health and safety. Based on discussion with the Licensee during the investigation there has not been a fire in the garage. Licensing found two fire extinguishers in the garage, one of which was unhooked and had its hose detached from its original position. There was no evidence of fire. Licensing cannot verify if a fire occurred while children were in the facility. This allegation is unable to be substantiated. Licensing received an allegation to Section 17 of the Child Care Licensing Regulation that children have access to objects or substances that may be hazardous to their health and safety. The complainant has expressed concerns about the children's safety and supervision with the garage doors open while work is in progress inside the garage, and children potentially having access to it. At the time of inspection, the garage doors were open while the children were playing in the fenced outdoor play area. The Licensee was the main care provider, although it is not required, another employee was also available to assist. Children were observed playing in the fenced area and appeared to have adequate supervision from staff. This allegation is unable to be substantiated.

    Observation. The Licensing Officer observed the children's handwashing routine. Some children were directed to the main room after washing their hands to wait while the licensee is assisting other children in the toilet, leaving some children unsupervised. Ensure that children are supervised by a qualified person at all times.
