    Observation. LO observed snack time, staff offered apple slices to children. LO asked if there is additional options (as per Canada Food Guide - CFG) staff stated if they eat their apples they will then offer them crackers or other items. But they have to finish fruit first. It is important that staff choose healthy food to offer children and children choose what and how much to eat.

    Observation. Discussion with the Manager regarding the need of ongoing maintenance due to the age of the building and the wear and tear observed. There is duct tape being used for repair, but this is a temporary solution. It is important for staff and Manager to ensure that the a plan in place to repair, clean and replace items as needed. Some of the items to be addressed include - floor boards, toilet handle, remove towels from children's access, bathroom mirror is not attached, chairs are discoloured and tables showing wear.

    Observation. there is one child who may require a care plan due to food allergy. Staff were unaware that this child had a note of food allergy on their file. No additional information was on file or medication (if required). Manager stated that they will talk to parent and have them include information on severity of allergy, if there is medication or update the form if needed. When registering, all allergies should be listed and all staff/practicum staff must be aware of these. Any allergy could be life threatening, and must be taken seriously.

    Observation. LO observed toilets, step stools, counters in both bathrooms were not cleaned. Manager stated that practicum students take turns cleaning the bathroom and when they are not on site, the staff take turns. LO discussed with the manager the importance of conducting a proper deep clean of the entire facility and keeping a cleaning schedule for all areas.

    Observation. As previously noted, the facility will require ongoing maintenance and repairs. At todays inspection LO observed that one bathroom is being used for storage for a variety of equipment / supplies / paper / etc. Licensing discussed concerns around cross contamination, use of bathroom for storage, and children walking in and out to get supplies.

    Observation. While there is a log book on site, it is not used regularly. LO and staff discussed the importance of documenting any incident that requires attention (first aid, support, contacting parents, information from parents, etc.)

    The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction.  They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]

    Observation. While there are areas of the facility that have been repaired and replaced, there are additional areas that are showing signs of wear and tear / maintenance required. These include - drawers in cabinet of main bathroom, that are not attached and therefore could be pulled out and could cause injury to a child, there is a tall bookshelf that is not secured to the wall, the walls and tables are peeling, and have areas that are exposed and therefore cannot be disinfected. LO discussed with the Manager the skylight near the back of the facility, it is blocked with wooden slats. The manager stated that this is to darken the space during nap time. It is recommended that children do not sleep in a dark space, as this is a nap and you want children to sleep / rest for a short period of time. LO also talked about the shelving within the rooms, and that they appear to be taking away floor space. If possible, could you remove some of these shelves to open up the space or put some equipment in storage so you can rotate materials / toys.

    Observation. Upon arrival at the facility, LO observed there were 2 staff supervising the children. The staff did not hold the qualifications of an ECE as per Schedule E. Discussion took place with the manager with regards to the staff scheduled to open and close the facility are required to have the correct qualifications. LO reviewed the Child Care Licensing Regulation Schedule E with the manager.

    Observation. LO reviewed all records and observed that 1 record in which the parent listed themselves as the emergency contact. Discussion took place with regards to the emergency contact being someone other than the parent in the event of an emergency.
