Observation. Licensing observed the gate going out to the outdoor space is broken, as well as a cupboard hinge in one of the infant/toddler rooms is broken. Licensing is concerned as these to items could cause an injury to a child if not fixed.

Observation. Originally found out of compliance January 3, 2025. Licensing observed that the cubbies and tables have chipped paint and the varnish is wearing on the shelves and tables due to cleaning and sanitizing as well as the daily operations of a child care facility.

Children are provided with a comprehensive and coordinated program of indoor and outdoor activities that is designed for the development and care of the children, and is appropriate for the age and development of the children. [CCLR Sec. 44(1)(a)(b)(c) and Schedule(G)]
Observation. Licensing observed that there were limited materials and toys for children who were participating in the outdoor space. While there were large pieces of equipment available, there were no items to supplement the large piece of equipment. For example, a toy kitchen, there were no items with the kitchen. i.e. pots, pans, dishes, utensils, table for serving. The sandbox. required sand and there were only a few items to play with in the sandbox.

Observation. There are two rooms for this program, they have a variety of equipment (Montessori based) and additional toys / equipment that are play based. There are signs of regular cleaning which is wearing the varnish on the tables and has made it unable to be sanitized and disinfected. To make cleaning easier, it is strongly recommended that staff remove any items that are not used or starting to show signs of wear and tear. The environment should be changed as needed to meet the needs of the children and their current interest.

Observation. There is a new child in care, the parent had given staff their Epi-pen, but no care plan was completed.

Observation. Drills are practiced monthly, but on the month that Emergency drill was conducted, no fire drill was practiced. As discussed, the emergency plan does not have to be a earthquake drill. And fire drills must be practiced every month.

Observation. The following areas were discussed with the manager as not easy to clean, not clean and/or not in good repair or not free from hazards - In two of the rooms there are areas with plastic wrap (on window sills in toddler room and metal rails in baby room). In a nap room, plugs / cord is accessible to children, and the gate between the two playgrounds has a hinge that is broken and fence is difficult to open / close. LO also raised concerns around the broken toilet paper holders.

Observation. Discussion with staff person regarding the environment and areas that require addressing, such as shelving and cupboards that are wearing and cannot be sanitized, edging of bathroom cupboards and seal around sinks in bathroom. It was also noted that the step stools and areas that children use their hands to move should also be cleaned regularly.

Observation. While the outdoor space is fully enclosed, there are items in the space that could be dangerous to children - such as - kiddy pools leaning against fence, sandbox used as storage.

Observation. LO reviewed staff files and observed that information (CRC done by facility with original application, references by facility, resume, proof of training - for BI) was not available.

Observation. This is a recurring contravention - LO observed staff records and observed that ECE certificates have not been verified with the registry. While the Manager may have verified the certificates in the past, there is no record showing when they were done. LO recommends printing the page from the ECE Registry that shows the validation information for each certificate.

Observation. In the children's washroom, LO observed soiled cleaning equipment such as the paper waste bin and the standing broom and dust pan sets.

Observation. LO observed the following in the program: -an unsecured table fan stored on the top shelf in the nap room which poses a risk of injury if the fan were to fall -the foam protecting the underside of the staircase is in poor repair. There are two sections of the underside which no longer are covered in the foam protector and this poses a risk of injury. LO observed the following in the shared washroom space: -the middle toilet stall appeared to be used as a storage space for staff shoes, a shelving unit, children's prop box and miscellaneous items -a storage bin containing toys and materials and a box were stored on the top shelf above the toilets which poses a risk if one were to fall -toys and materials were stored on the top shelf above the hand washing and change table area which poses a risk if an item were to fall -a toilet bowl brush next to the toilet accessible to children
