  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. DOLSOP Safe Play Space – Spaces (i.e. holes or openings) poses a risk for potential entrapment. The fence ( facing the neighbour's fence) is weaken, rotted and broken at the bottom, exposing large gaps and number of nails. LO discussed about ensuring that outdoor play area is safely enclosed at all times in a way that is free from hazard and in good repair.

    Corrective action. Ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are in care.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. LO observed and discussed the following with the Manager: - There were not sufficient playground surfacing around the play equipment, i.e. slide and swings. LO discussed about ensuring that sufficient and appropriate protecting surfacing is available to reduce the risk of injury from falls. - Indoor Blinds: there were couple of broken and damaged slats at the bottom of the blinds exposing sharp edges to the children.

    Corrective action. Ensure that all furniture, fixture and equipment within the facility are clean and in good repair.

  • HYGIENE AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

    A licensee, other than a licensee who provides a care program described as either Preschool (30 Months to School Age) or Group Child Care (School Age), must have in a community care facility a sturdy surface for changing diapers, located outside the food preparation area, next to (a) a covered container for soiled clothing.

    Observation. The garbage bin within the washroom had no lid. LO discussed about using a bin with cover to avoid children from accessing soiled diapers/pull ups.

    Corrective action. Ensure that a covered container for soiled clothing is available.

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene.

    Observation. Children are not using single use towels to dry their hands after hand hygiene. The facility has assigned 1 cotton towel to each child to be used, i.e. 1 towel per child /per day. If cotton towels are used, ensure that sufficient single use towels are available after each hand washing.

    Corrective action. Ensure that children use single use towels to dry their hands after each hand washing.

    A licensee must keep current records of each of the following: (c) a record respecting compliance with section 22 (2) (b) and (c) [emergency training and equipment].

    Observation. LO noted that fire drill for August 2023 was not recorded accurately. The Licensee stated that fire drill was practiced with the children.

    Corrective action. Ensure that current records of all drills ( monthly fire drills and yearly emergency drill) are kept.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (c) daily attendance record, indicating for each day whether the child is absent or, if the child is present, the time of arrival and departure.

    Observation. During the inspection it was observed that the daily attendance records were not up to date. The last entry for the attendance records was July 17, 2021. There was no record of atendence for the week of July 19-23, 2021. I was also noted that the sheet of paper used for attendance has the year 2020 printed on instead of 2021.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that the daily attendance records are up to date.

    Observation. During inspection 4 children's files were reviewed. Out of 4 files, 2 were missing an enrollment date.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - The linoleum tiling in the bathroom and main entrance is peeling. Some areas have been patched up using tape. This surface cannot be cleaned and disinfected appropriately. - There is paint chipping around the moulding of the sink - The hard wood flooring in the main play area and hallway is showing signs of wear and tear. The surface cannot be cleaned and disinfected appropriately - The kitchen cabinets are beginning to show signs of wear. Some parts of the cabinet have become porous and cannot be cleaned and disinfected appropriately.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the furniture, equipment and fixtures are clean and in food repair.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - Children's bedding is stored in a closet where each mat is touching eachother. Some mats already have a crib sheet placed on it posing a risk for bacteria and germs to spread easily. - The Licensee stated mats are disinfected once a week. The current requirement for covid protocols is to disinfect this surface daily. - Children are provided individual towels to dry their hands. The Licensee stated the towels are washed every 3 days. The current requirement for covid protocols is to use single use towels.

    Corrective action. Please ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times.
