  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (a) suitable for the age and development of the children.

    Observation. DLSOP - Safe Play Space - A climbing dome that is accessible to the GCC(30 mos to SA) children is more than 1.5m (5ft) in height. The Manager said the children do not climb passed the first level.

    Corrective action. Ensure all indoor and outdoor material and equipment is suitable for the age and development of the children.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. The following was observed in the GCC(30 mos to SA) classroom: - Black garbage bags stored in a unsecured cupboard that was accessible to the children (Corrected during the inspection) - Knob on the bathroom cupboard is missing The following was observed in the GCC(SA) classroom: - Garbage bins with no lid. Garbage is accessible to the children. The following was observed in the outdoor play space: - A broken doll house - Sand/water table with rust on the legs - Area behind the shed has a large gap posing a supervision issue

    Corrective action. Ensure there is a system to maintain a healthy and safe environment.

    Observation. Licensing observed the name of the Manager was not posted.

  • LICENSING

    Licensees must not make any structural change to a community care facility unless the licensee first (a) submits plans for the change to a medical health officer.

    Observation. Licensing observed in the GCC(30 mos to SA) outdoor play space, it was no longer fenced on one side of the playground. In discussion with a staff, they said a new walk in cooler was being built in the area adjacent to the playground therefore, the church required the fence to be removed. In dicussion with the Manager, it appears once the fence is put back up the facility will loose some square feet from their outdoor play space. The Manager said she was not aware she needed to notify Licensing about the construction or the changes that will be made to the playground.

    Corrective action. Ensure plans are submitted to Licensing outlining any structural changes made to the facility. A new site plan will need to be submitted to Licensing.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. LO observed and discussed the following today: -Outdoor Play Space: a gap /opening in the bottom part of a chain link gate. The opening was larger than 9cm but smaller than 23cm posing potential risk for entrapment. - Large climbing dome is available for the School Age children within their outdoor play area. There were not sufficient space around for proper use of the equipment, i.e. 6 ft in all directions.

    Corrective action. Ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are in care.

    Observation. Mixing of groups longer than 30 minutes (at the beginning and/or end of the day). Children from GCC (302) and GCC (305) were combined in a single group from 7:00 am-8:30 am.

    Corrective action. Ensure that children from different service types are only mixed for the first and/or last 30 minutes of the day.

    Observation. During routine inspection, the manager of the facility informed licensing that there are 3 children under 3 attending the Group Child Care (30 months - School Age) program. No request for Exemption had been submitted to licensing. The manager had explained that they had enrolled the 3rd child recently by error while she was off on a leave.

    Corrective action. Ensure that each group has no more children that what is permitted in Schedule E.
