At today's follow up inspection, Licensing observed that several outstanding issues remain that require immediate attention: - Loose cement pavers pose a tripping hazard. - Several wood stumps and seating logs are rotten and loose; the stumps are in poor condition with edges that have crumbled significantly. The program will continue to keep the areas containing wood stumps and logs closed off to eliminate any potential risks to children. The Manager has confirmed that the necessary repair works are scheduled to take place this upcoming weekend.

The Manager has been agreed that the appropriated measures are in place to closed off the areas containing wood stumps and logs for the purposes of eliminating any potential risk to children.

At today's visit, the center supervisor confirmed that the program is in the process of obtaining funding to be approved in order to address these outstanding playground maintenance issues.

During today's visit Licensing observed significant progressive decay and rot throughout the entire wooden deck. Several wooden boards appeared broken, exposing sharp edges and nails. The entire wooden deck appeared uneven and sunken in when standing on them. The manager informed that they are waiting for funding to be approved in order to address these outstanding playground maintenance issues. However, this wooden deck requires repair as soon as possible as it poses a safety hazard.

    Observation. On June 27 2024, Licensing observed the following: A written plan which is to address the lack of supervision of children when a single Educator is responsible for many children and who are located in various areas of the program space has been provided to Licensing. The plan does not appear to offer a level of supervision and support as required when children are needing support in the bathroom and when also eating at one of the tables in the main activity space. Further review and consideration of this issue is needed.

Licensing observed the dramatic play / home-living furniture worn, chipped and not in good repair and located in the outside play space. Due to exposure to the weather, the equipment is in poor condition. The Manager informed that there is a plan to discard it.

    Observation. Licensing observed three children eating snack in the main activity space, one child being supported in the bathroom and several children sleeping in the nap / gross motor room. One Educator was responsible to support and supervise all of these children without another Educator present. At one point, there was no Educator present in the main activity space. When speaking with the Educator, Licensing was informed that it was believed that this arrangement would be acceptable because the gate to the bathroom remained open. A few moments later, Licensing observed the Manager present in the main activity space. Licensing observed Educators communicating with one another as to the number of children who were outside playing.

    Observation. Licensing observed a locked small room containing various play equipment and materials. Please inform as to children's access to them. Licensing observed the following available to the children during outside play: * several tricycles * building blocks * movable parts (rounded wooden domes, balancing units) * a couple of small shovels and a few containers for sand play Licensing observed the outside storage containing a wide variety of toys and equipment including those that will support active play. Licensing observed the rounded wooden domes positioned at the bottom of the slide. A wood block was positioned at the bottom of a climbing ladder on the outside climber. A discussion occurred with the Manager about the importance of having a six foot safety zone in these areas. The Manager informed that a conversation will occur with the children about placing such items in this zone.

    Observation. Licensing reviewed the menu that was observed posted in the kitchen. Today's afternoon snack was cheese buns and orange segments. This snack was not reflected on the menu. Licensing was informed that the foods selected have been based on what is available and also what the children tend to enjoy eating. Licensing asked how changes to the menu are communicated to families and learned that there has been no menu plan available and that communicating these changes has been inconsistent.

Licensing observed the following: * liquid hand soap and single-use hand towels at hand sinks * bleach / water spray bottles are available for disinfecting surfaces * soap / water (detergent) spray bottles are available for cleaning surfaces (Licensing recommends the labelling of the spray bottles.) * fridge temperature = 4'C Licensing observed a roll of paper towel located in a basket with other items at the art sink. It is recommended that a holder is made available for the paper towel. Outside Play Space: * loose boards presenting a trip hazard in the outside play space * boards in different stages of decay in the decking * broken fencing located adjacent to the GCC (Under 36 Months) outside play space - near the GCC (30 Months to SA) climber * boards on the climber's barrier appear to be in various stages of decay * loose cement pavers - unstable walking surface / possible trip hazard * black garden edging in raised concrete plant beddings - fraying and exposed * trees, bushes and plant material appear to have died off

    Observation. Children's bedding is stored individually to prevent the spread of illness and infection. Licensing observed six children who were sleeping without a sheet on their mat. When asking about this, Licensing was informed that the laundry had not been completed and that were no other sheets to offer.

    Observation. Licensing was informed that there is no logbook which Educators use to document compliance of care plans for children requiring extra support. This was discussed with a representative of the Licensee during the inspection.

    For each child requiring extra support, the licensee keeps a current care plan showing the required information. [CCLR Sec. 58(1)(2)]

    Observation. Licensing observed no care plan in place for a child who had a breathing condition and who also required medication. Licensing was informed that the child no longer needs this medication and it will be returned to the family. A permission form was in place for the administration of the medication however no other documentation was observed specific to the reasons for the medication or signs / symptoms. Licensing recommends that copies of care plans, including children's photos, are placed with medications.

    Observation. Although Licensing was informed that daily outside play space inspections have been occurring, no documentation of the inspections is in place. An Educator acquired a new checklist and made it available outside.
