- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical
The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]
Observation. Conducted an inspection of the indoor gym as well as the outdoor playground with Acting Lead. Observed that the indoor gym is well maintained and the equipment is in satisfactory condition. Gym mats below the indoor climbing structure are of good quality and in good condition. The outdoor playground is shared with the daycare. One of the daycare groups was using the outdoor playground at the time of inspection. Acting lead and preschool staff stated the preschool's allotted time in the playground starts at 11 am. Observed that there were some rotting wood retaining logs around the path. The outdoor play yard is undergoing "bandaid" repairs as needed until such time as the yard is retrofitted and redone to support the proposed infant / toddler program. Acting lead said the teams and facilities are monitoring the rotting wood elements and repairing as needed. CCFL is supportive of this approach for now until full playground renovation. Inquired as to the HVAC unit, stacked fence panels and posts and the caution tape around the HVAC unit. Acting lead stated the HVAC unit was recently replaced however no time frame had been provided for replacing the safety fencing around the unit. While staff are vigilant in supervising the children outdoors, the fencing must be replaced asap to help ensure child safety and prevent injuries.
