    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Outdoor Play Space: -A wooden activity board which is accessible to children is rotting, losing paint and curling at the edges. -A bicycle has a seat that is damaged. -Ride on toy with a broken steering wheel which is sharp to touch. -A large art installation on the fence has an area of extreme rot which is accessible to children. -A large plastic play house is broken in several places. -Chipping paint on the fence, accessible to children. -A planter box has split on the edges causing a pinching hazard. Indoor Play Space: -Rubber bumpers on a pillar are peeling and are ripped. -A storage basket has a broken handle exposing sharp edges.

    Corrective action. Discussed establishing systems of self identifying maintenance needs of the physical facility, equipment and supplies.

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. A metal transition strip in the outdoor play space without an effective mechanism to keep it flush to the ground is posing a tripping hazard. Additionally, the strip has sharp metal edges that are elevated off the ground making it a hazard that children can cut themselves on.

    Corrective action. Eliminate tripping and cutting hazard.

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene.

    Observation. Licensing observed: -Staff did not change gloves in between diaper changes. -Children were not instructed to wash hands after toileting.

    Corrective action. Discussed establishing systems of healthy and hygiene which includes hand washing protocols for staff and children.

    Observation. -Bollards in the outdoor play space are covered with foam to mitigate risk of injury, however, the foam has come off the top exposing metal. -Cubbies are not anchored in anyway to mitigate risk of tipping. -A tall shelf with a microwave on it is posing a tipping hazard.

    Corrective action. Ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times.

    When advertising or otherwise offering services to the public, a licensee must identify the care program being offered.

    Observation. The facility amended their Community Care Facility Licence to operate two classrooms of Group Child Care (30 months to school age) and proposed a full day care schedule for the amendment. Licensing observed that one of the classrooms has been advertising and operating as a preschool program. The morning class is operating from 9.00 am to 1.00 PM and the afternoon class operates from 1.30 PM to 4.00 PM. Children's registrations indicate that parents are registered for a preschool program. Additionally, the attendance sheet is labelled as a preschool class. The Manager said that this classroom is identified as a preschool program, when families are touring the facility.

    Corrective action. Please ensure to identify, advertise and offer the service type that is depicted on the facility licence. If you wish to operate a Preschool program, please amend your licence.
