    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following that are accessible to children in care; - in the Preschool and GCC (SA) classroom a child's epi-pen is in the earthquake bin that has no lock on it - bleach and water solution bottle sitting on the counter in the GCC (30 months to SA) classroom - an unlocked kitchen area with a cupboard filled with cleaning chemicals and a pantry with cleaning chemicals - rat box, a broken metal planter, two wooden boards with screws in them in one of the outdoor areas used

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention has been addressed.

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following in the outdoor play area; - two balls that are ripped and deflated. - the outdoor play toys and equipment are dirty and have grime on them. Discussed having a system in place to ensure that the outdoor equipment and toys are cleaned.

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention has been addressed.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following; - paint chipping off the wall in several areas of the group child care (30 months to SA) classroom - hole in the closet door in the GCC (30 months to SA) classroom - a handle broken for one closet door in the GCC (30 months to SA) classroom - several wooden tables chipped in areas in the Preschool classroom - broken wooden frame for a big piece of artwork that's resting against the wall in the Preschool classroom. The Manager said that broken artwork will be thrown out. - over grown trees and bushes in the outdoor play area.

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention has been addressed.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following; - the fridge temperature was measured at 8 degrees Celsius. Licensing provided education that the fridge temperature should be between 0-8 degrees Celsius as children's food are stored in it. - a carpet curling at one end in the Preschool and Group Child Care (SA) room.

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention was addressed.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (c) daily attendance record, indicating for each day whether the child is absent or, if the child is present, the time of arrival and departure.

    Observation. Upon review of the attendance records, Licensing observed the following; - one day that children's time of departure was not recorded. - five days that children were not identified as absent. Licensing had a discussion on how to ensure that this regulation is maintained.

    Corrective action. The Manager will ensure that children are identified as absent.

    Observation. Licensing observed a carpet in the Preschool room that has curled up at the corners. Potential tripping hazard.

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention will be addressed.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following; - A plastic lid, covering a water table in the Preschool room, is broken. Sharp edges. - Several areas that the paint has chipped. - Several sleeping mats are ripped exposing the foam underlay. - A wooden vent has broken off the side building wall in the outdoor play area and a rusted nail is sticking out. - The chain-link fence enclosing the outdoor play area is broken in two areas. The top metal pole that holds the fence up in two areas is no longer there causing the fence to fall forwards. The neighbouring plot is a construction site at the moment.

    Corrective action. A written response to be submitted to Licensing on how this contravention will be addressed.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. The following was noted: -Cubbies within GCC 3-5 program is not secured to the wall. -Vines that run along the ground within the playground can act as a tripping hazard. -Fluorescent lights within the gym do not have covers. Can become hazardous if the tubes were to break.

    Corrective action. Please ensure a healthy and safe environment.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. The following was noted: -GCC 3-5 program, one wall and door where the pain has started to peel from the wall and there are pits within the drywall. -Swing set is in disrepair as it is wobbly, a piece of metal that is used to secure the structure is exposed and sticking out. Wood at the top of the structure has started to split. -A shelving unit that holds baskets within the School Age program is wobbly and is in need of repair. -Green sandbox is in disrepair as it is cracked.

    Corrective action. Please ensure facility is in good repair.

    Observation. The following were observed at today's inspection: -Some areas on wall where paint is peeling and requires touch ups. -Broken toys within outdoor play space. -Multiple tables within both programs that are pitted, making them difficult to adequately clean.

  • STAFFING

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

    Observation. 5 staff files were reviewed, 3 of the 5 files did not have criminal record checks. One staff had an application to share their criminal record check within their file, however, it had been completed in May and not yet been obtained, one staff works at another facility and did not bring a copy of their CRC to the facility. The final staff had just started and had not yet completed the paperwork to apply for a criminal record check, an expired CRC from another facility had been provided however. Discussion had in regard to obtaining all required information within the file prior to starting employment at the facility. Staff who do not have up to date criminal record checks should not be left alone with the children.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that staff files are complete along with an up to date, site specific criminal record check.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (f) evidence that the person has complied with the Province's immunization and tuberculosis control programs.

    Observation. Immunization status was not obtained for one employee. Staff stated that they started today and were late so had to go right away to conduct after school pick up so their paperwork was not yet completed for the staff. Discussion had with the Manager about obtaining information required within the staff file prior to the start commencing employment.

    Corrective action. Please ensure staff files are complete.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. The following items were noted: -Holes in a vent that covers the forced air within the School Age program. -Wood is rotting at the door frame of the door to the outdoor play space for the 3-5 program. -Some areas of the chain link fence have turned into an entrapment hazard. in particular the fence parallel to 148 St. There appears to be a larger gap between two posts and a large hole within the chain link.

    Corrective action. Please ensure facility is in good repair.
