    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Disinfecting wipes accessible to children in an unlocked cabinet. Upon notifying the manager, the wipes were placed in another cabinet that is out of children's reach.

    Corrective action. Please ensure cleaning products and supplies are inaccessible to children.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. The following was observed: 1) In one of the GCC (30 months to school age) programs, there are multiple unsecured and large items stored on top of the wooden loft. There is a potential for these items to fall onto children. 2) Rusty gate locks are still present in the outdoor area. The manager has purchased new gate locks, but the olds one have yet to be replaced. This is a repeat contravention from inspection #NSAO-DEPRXQ.

    Corrective action. 1) These items will be stored elsewhere. The very tops of shelving and/or equipment should not be used as storage. 2) The rusty gate locks will be replaced as soon as possible.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. In the shared washroom between two under 36 months programs, there is duct tape peeling away from foam by the wooden gate as well as peeling tape on the edges of the 2 wooden diaper changing surfaces. The peeling tape does not allow for a thorough cleaning of equipment.

    Corrective action. The manager will address these areas without the use of tape.

    Observation. In one of the 30 months to School Age programs, 1 toilet is missing the cover to the water tank. In place, a plastic lid has been taped over the area. As per the manager, she is aware of this and is trying to obtain a new cover for the water tank, but explained that it has been challenging to just replace the cover.

    Corrective action. Please submit a plan to Licensing outlining how this item will be replaced or fixed.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. 1) In one of the under 36 months program’s nap room, there are multiple items stored on top of one another on the shelving units. This presents a falling hazard onto children. 2) Rust is presenting on the outdoor gate locks.

    Corrective action. 1) These items will be placed elswhere. Licensing and the Manager discussed clearing the tops of shelving units and to only have light items placed here if needed. Correct by Friday, March 14, 2025. 2) Please submit a plan to Licensing outlining how the rust on these gate locks will be addressed. Correct by Monday, March 24, 2025

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    Observation. The following was observed in the outdoor area: 1) The artificial grass hill is covered with sand causing the area to be slippery. 2) Multiple areas have low levels of sand which now emphasizes rocks and edges as tripping hazards. 3) In the under 36 months outdoor area, the black felt, and plastic lining are exposing causing a tripping hazard. 4) Wood chip levels are low around the wooden rock-climbing structure. The black felt lining underneath the woodchips has also been exposed. 5) In the large planter, the plastic lining with sharp edges is exposed.

    Corrective action. Please submit a plan regarding how the outdoor items will be addressed.

    Observation. 1) In one of the under 36 months program, there is expired emergency medication. By the second day of the inspection, a program staff followed up with the parent to obtain current medication. 2) In one of the 30 months to School Age program, medication to be administered as per parent’s instructions was not available at the facility.

    Corrective action. 1) Please submit a plan that outlines the safety measures that the facility will take until the new medication is obtained. 2) The Manager will follow up with the parents regarding this medication.

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Fire extinguishers are overdue for servicing. During the inspection, the Manager scheduled a date to service the extinguishers. By the second day of the inspection, all fire extinguishers were serviced and displayed new service tag dates.

    Corrective action. Please ensure fire extinguishers are serviced annually.

    Observation. Two children with parents as emergency contacts. Licensing and the Manager discussed emergency contacts as being individuals that are: not the parents and that can contact the parents when the facility cannot.

    Observation. Across two under 36 months programs, there are 3 children with allergies and no written follow-up instructions from parents if the allergen is ingested. 1 child has a food restriction due to medical history and no written documentation of this by the parents. By the second day of the inspection, this documentation was obtained. .

    Corrective action. The Manager will follow up with the remaining parents to obtain written follow-up instructions.

    Observation. Upon reviewing care plans for each program, Licensing observed that in the following programs, care plans were not annually reviewed with the parents of the child. Some staff have verbally spoken to certain parents regarding certain care plans, but a date of review was not documented. Licensing explained that if nothing has changed on the care plan then to document the date of review and signature of the parent on the existing care plan and if any information has changed, then a new care plan is to be filled out and dated with a parent signature. -In one of the under 36 months programs, 1 child with a care plan was not reviewed annually with the parents. -In both of the 30 months to School Age programs, 6 children’s care plans have not been reviewed annually with the parents. -In both of the School Age programs, 2 children’s care plans have not been reviewed annually with the parents.

    Corrective action. Please ensure care plans are reviewed with parents annually.

    Observation. Upon reviewing program attendance sheets, Licensing observed that in the Maple and Birch programs there were multiple days of the week where several children’s arrival, departure, and/or absences were not recorded.

    Corrective action. Please record children’s arrival, departure, and absences for every day that the facility is operating.

    Observation. Upon reviewing fire and earthquake drill records, Licensing observed the following: -Chestnut room: a fire drill was not recorded for April 2023. As per the staff, a fire drill was not conducted for both months.

    Observation. During the inspection of the physical facility it was noted that the manager's name was not on display. Manager thought the manager's name was on the CCFL license. The practice has changed and the manager's name is no longer on the license.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the manager's name is posted in a prominent location.

    Observation. On July 7, 2021 licensing identified areas within the facility where the walls are in need of repair, a couch is in need of repair or replacement and the top of a half door needs repair. Please refer to routine inspection report #SMOY-C4QUP6 for further information.

    Corrective action. During today's inspection the Manager indicated they are in the process of addressing these items.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During the inspection licensing identified areas within the facility (most notably in the Pine and Oak rooms) where the walls have areas where the top layer of the gyproc has been removed exposing the porous portion. Licensing also noted a couch in the Oak room has a tear exposing the foam and a wooden strip on the top of the half door to children's washrooms is not sealed. These areas are no longer cleanable as they are now porous. Outdoors the faucets in the outdoor kitchen are showing signs of rust.

    Corrective action. The above noted items will need to be repaired and/or replaced in a manner that they may be cleaned and/or sanitized.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing saw what appeared to be signs of rust on some of the dramatic play materials in the Cedar Room. Licensing also observed rust in the outdoor play area on the handrails and gate latches. Rust can pose a concern as it may contain the bacteria that is associated with tetanus.

    Corrective action. The Manager removed the rusty play materials during the time of the inspection. The items noted in the outdoor play area will need to be repaired.

    Observation. The Licensing Officer noted in the Birch Room the door within the classroom is unable to close due to damage to the door frame and there is a shelf unit that is not secured to the wall. The Licensee has temporarily placed a couch in front of the door ensuring individuals have no access until it is repaired. The shelf unit must be secured in a manner that will prevent it from tipping over.

    Corrective action. The Licensee will need to repair the above noted items.
