    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. The manager communicated to Licensing that bathrooms are cleaned by professional cleaners daily, though if immediate cleaning is required during care hours after children use the bathroom, the same spray bottle as what is used in the classroom area is used in the bathroom. This item is a repeat contravention on routine inspection reports #NSAO-CNV24Q on 08/Feb/2023 & #NSAO-D2PNZ5 on 21/Feb/2024.

    Corrective action. Have separate spray cleaning bottles for each classroom and each bathroom.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (d) name and telephone number of a parent, medical practitioner and emergency contact.

    Observation. Licensing observed 2 children's files had their parents / someone outside of Canada as their emergency contacts. This item is a repeat contravention on routine inspection report #NSAO-D2PNZ5 on 21/Feb/2024.

    Corrective action. Emergency contacts should be readily available in case of emergency and should be different from the parents.

    Observation. Staff did not immediately notify the parent when a child sustained an injury at the facility.

    Corrective action. The contravention has been addressed and no further action is required.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): 1 of the toilets in one of the 30 months to School Age programs has duct tape with edges that are lifting. These areas can harbour bacteria. As per the Manager, they are aware that this toilet (water tank) is in need of repair and have plans to replace it. On the 2nd day of the inspection, a maintenance worker was on site in order to address this toilet.

    Corrective action. Please ensure all equipment and furniture are clean and in good repair.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (d) name and telephone number of a parent, medical practitioner and emergency contact. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): 1 child's emergency contact listed is a parent. Manager has already connected with the parents to obtain the contact information of an individual that is neither parents. On the second day of the inspection, the Manager showed Licensing that an emergency contact that is not the parents has been provided and documented in the child's file.

    Corrective action. Please ensure an emergency contact is an individual that is neither parent and who is able to contact parents in case the facility cannot reach the parents.

    Observation. 1/8 staff file that contains a criminal record check that is not site-specific. CRC on file is valid and is addressed to the Licensee's other location. Manager is aware of this.

    Corrective action. Manager will apply to share the staff's CRC with this location.

    Observation. In the infant program, the washroom gate displays signs of the laminate wood starting to chip and peel. This poses as a splintering hazard.

    Corrective action. Please ensure furniture, equipment and fixtures are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    The licensee must (b) review the care plan at least once each year with a parent of the child requiring extra support and any person requested by the parent.

    Observation. Licensing noted that the last documented date on a child's care plan was back in 2021. In discussion with the Manager, the care plan was reviewed last month (school year for the facility is July-June) with the parents but the date of review was not recorded.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that care plans are reviewed annually with parents and/or any person requested by the parent.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During the inspection of the physical facility it was observed that a couple of walls in two classrooms showed signs of paint peeling and dry wall being exposed.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the facility is in good repair while children are in attendance.

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. During the inspection of the physical facility it was noted that in two classrooms, plastic bags were stored in a container on the bathroom counter. The plastic bags present a hazard to the children due to the easy access to the bags.

    Corrective action. Please ensure children do not have access to any hazardous items.

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (a) name, sex, date of birth, medical insurance plan number and immunization status.

    Observation. During the inspection 10 random children's files were reviewed. One file did not have a record of immunization. Manager stated and showed evidence of correspondence between the manager and the parents regarding child's immunization. At the time of the inspection there was no evidence of the child's immunization record.

    Corrective action. Please ensure all children's files are completed.

    Observation. During the inspection, 6 random files were reviewed and it was noted that one staff had a police check from New Westminster Police Department. Manager stated that she could not apply for a CRC through the Victoria branch due to the employee's lack of documentation. Manager stated that she will apply for a CRC immediately.

    Corrective action. Please ensure all employees have a valid CRC.
