A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

Observation. LO observed four unstable shelving units within the child care play area.

Corrective action. Manager stated the shelving units will be secured to the wall.

A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

Observation. LO observed bleach, Pine Sol and liquid detergent (in an empty Gatorade bottle) in the washroom cupboard which was accessible to children in care. There was no safety lock.

Corrective action. Manager removed items at the time of inspection and will implement a system to ensure children do not have access.

A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility as (a) an educator or an assistant unless the person holds a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the system maintained by the early childhood educator registry. (Educator or assistant certificate validation)

Observation. LO reviewed three staff files, all of which were missing verification of certificate.

Corrective action. Manager stated they would verify certificates using the early childhood educator registry.
