  • C2.1 - Are written policies and procedures in place to guide employees in all matters regarding the care and supervision of children?Non-critical

Observation. Observations: Written policies and procedures in place and available for staff to review. Fire Drills and Emergency response plan practiced and recorded appropriately. Contravention: The LO observed a staff sending a child to sit on a bench alone as the parent was going to be called to pick the child up a consequence of spitting in another child's face. The child sat on the bench until the staff called the child to where the LO and staff were standing. The staff spoke about the child in negative terms to the LO while the child was standing next to the staff. The LO requested the behavioural guidance policy which states the following : "Consequences must be natural, logical and appropriate for a child's age, children's feelings must be acknowledged & discipline at our centre is dealt with in a positive manner. Giving the child options is a great way to empower them to redirect their own behaviour. These options should be conducive to the desired behaviour while giving the child choices that help them self-regulate and meet their needs in the moment. Kids can rejoin an activity once they feel they have regained self-control." "How we communicate with kids is important and we should take a positive approach when describing them. With this technique, we can train ourselves to help kids develop their character from the inside out. We provide them with tools, giving power to them rather than having power over them."

  • C9.1 - Are there plans and actions in place to ensure medications are stored and administered properly?Non-critical

Observation. A medication administration authorization included the times and dates the medication was administered, however was missing the amount to be administered. - this contravention is considered as corrected during inspection as Manager was communicating with staff whom indicated that the form has been updated to include specific details of dosage.

  • C10.1 - Are children provided with a healthy and safe environment, and protected from harmful actions?Non-critical

Observation. The staff who sent the child to sit on the bench, redirected the child using negative words, spoke standing , looking down at the child, spoke about the child to the LO in within the child's direct hearing.

  • C3.2 - Are persons qualified and appropriately replaced?Critical

Observation. C3.2C Child Care Licensing Regulation Section 29 (a-d) During the inspection it was confirmed with the manager that first aid training has been included as part of staff's qualifications. The 20 hour requirement of training must be related to child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition - first aid is not included as this is a separate requirement as per section 23 of the Child Care Licensing Regulation.
