Huckleberry Daycare - Group Child Care (Under 36 Months)

The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction.  They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]

Observation. A screen door that leads to the outdoor space is observed to be broken.

The licensee keeps a current record for each child showing the information required. [CCLR Sec. 57]

Observation. Licensing observed one child to be missing medical insurance information, and a medical practitioner in records.

Observation. Licensing observed a wooden pole on the "hobbit house" play hut to show signs of rot near the bottom.

All indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are suitable for the age and development of the children, safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair. [CCLR Sec. 16(4)]

Observation. Licensing observed two toy strollers to be broken.

The licensee keeps a current record for each child showing the information required. [CCLR Sec. 57]

Observation. Licensing observed 2 children to be missing doctor's information, and one child to be missing medical insurance information. It was also observed that 2 children had allergies noted on the emergency cards, which staff clarified were no longer the case. Information regarding health and safety are highly recommended to be consistent throughout documents and kept up to date.

A healthy and safe environment is provided at all times [CCLR Sec. 13(1)].

Observation. *An unlabelled spray bottle containing cleaning chemicals was observed. *The mattress cover on the pack 'n play was visibly soiled. The manager reports bedding is washed once per week. *A blue sleep mat was observed to be worn on the corners making this item porous and no longer easy to keep clean.

Ground Surfacing: The depth of loose fill material (protective surfacing) meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of the Standard of Practice. [Director of Licensing Standard of Practice - Safe Play Space]

Observation. *More resilient ground covering is required in the fall zones around equipment.

For each child requiring extra support, the licensee keeps a current care plan showing the required information. [CCLR Sec. 58(1)(2)]

Observation. *A child requiring extra support for a diagnosed issue did not have a care plan. *Care plans for children requiring life saving medications were not visible. While not in non-compliance because the care plans do exist, it would be considered best practice to have them posted in a conspicuous area.

The licensee has written, parental consent to release a child to someone other than the parent. [CCLR Sec. 57(3)(b)]

Observation. *One of the children's records did not indicate complete emergency pick up information.

Observation. *The wooden cover that previously housed a baseboard heater in the play room has been removed. This item was first observed to be out of compliance on May 5, 2021. *The children's cubbies are beginning to show wear. Licensing observed chips in the wood and paint throughout which presents the possibility of slivers as well as the now porous exposed wood has become difficult to clean. This item was first observed to be out of compliance on May 5, 2021.

Observation. *There is no covered container for soiled diapers or clothing in the washroom. *Made up sleep mats stored in the closet of the studio were observed to be touching. This poses the possibility of cross-contamination. *An unsecured lower cupboard in the washroom was observed to contain loose wires and items required for the care of fish.

Observation. *Sharp metal brackets were observed on the legs of a bench in the outdoor play yard, *The hammock in the outdoor play yard has mildew and winter algae from being exposed to the elements. *A bag of garden compost has exploded in the yard.

Observation. *The emergency contacts listed on the emergency cards are not always consistent with "persons authorized to pick up" on the registration forms. *2 emergency cards did not have out of town contacts. *1 emergency card did not have a local emergency contact.

There is a diaper changing area that is adjacent to a wash basin, that is located away from the food preparation area, and that has a covered container for soiled clothing. [CCLR Sec. 14(4)]

Observation. *The garbage can designated for diapering has no lid. This poses the possibility of cross contamination of germs.

The Manager reports that this heater is not currently being used but that because children are playing on the floor, it was too chilly without it this past winter season. *The children's cubbies are beginning to show wear. Licensing observed chips in the wood and paint throughout which presents the possibility of slivers as well as the now porous exposed wood has become difficult to clean.

The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]

Observation. *Licensing observed the picket fence alongside the sandbox has begun to splinter and collapse. *There is loose slat on the deck which is currently covered by a planter. *The play equipment is covered in winter algae. *Licensing observed two circular ropes hanging down from a tree in the play yard. This poses an entanglement hazard. *While not currently in non-compliance, Licensing observed the edges of the decking are starting to deteriorate. It is recommended to put a maintenance or future replacement plan in place in order to avoid a larger issue.

Observation. *Licensing observed 2 of the children's records were missing care card numbers. *1 of the children's records did not contain immunization information.
