- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGEnvironmentNon-critical
The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction. They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]
Observation. Licensing observed the following: * located on the toddler program's side of a gate that connects both the infant and toddler outside play space, the decking is raised and presents as a trip hazard * paint on a steel pillar located by a drain pipe appears to be rusty / flaking; the metal box located in the same area is rusty * the hut with the living planted roof - wood rot is observed at the base of posts and on nearby decking board * the toddler climber has observed wood rot / broken picket as well as wood deterioration present at the edge of platform boards * a tree located in the bubble car riding area appears to have some limbs which are no longer viable; in order to prevent breakage and a possible injury to a child / Educator, an inspection is recommended to determine if pruning is needed * green debris was observed in the garden beds: considering that a rodent box was observed in the outside play space, removal of the debris will help provide a less hospitable environment for rodents * a retractable awning appears to be a challenge to open - recommend that it be serviced
- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGHazardous Objects and SubstancesNon-critical
Hazardous objects and substances are inaccessible to children. [CCLR Sec 17]
Observation. Licensing observed the following: * bees were observed flying in and out of an area located below the infant program's outside climbing structure; this climber provides a division between the two outside play spaces: a piece of wood trim was in place at the base of the infant program's climbing (toddler side) - it appears to prevent children from having immediate access to where the bees are located: the proximity of the bees to the toddler children is of significant concern and must be addressed immediately * protruding nails accessible to children were identified in the outside play space (addressed by the Manager during the inspection) * a piece of plywood has been simply placed over a hole (approximately 10 inches by 8 inches in size) located in a child accessible garden bed; it appears that the wood once in place has rotted away; instead of addressing this issue, boards were installed in front of the garden bed with access still permitted at the side * an entrapment hazard is identified between a raised yet accessible garden bed and the perimeter guard - at the side and entire length of the garden bed: the approximate measurement of the gap as taken by Licensing is 6.5 inches and with an approximate depth of one meter as informed by the Manager - please note that gaps measuring between 3.5 to 9 inches are considered a hazard * the free-standing trellis (with what appears to be honeysuckle on it) is not stable in its posts; with light pressure, the trellis moves back and forth * a rodent box was observed accessible to children * in the bubble car riding area: a garden box trim is no longer attached / broken; a board in place at one side of the storage shed has deteriorated and no longer provides a barrier to prevent access to the space between the shed and the perimeter guard; plastic is protruding from a perimeter wall / guard * in the cubby room entryway, the safety sleeve for a blind's cord is no longer present leaving the looped cord dangling and accessible to children (addressed by the Manager during the inspection) * the gate leading from the toddler's inside program space to the kitchen was left open despite signage displayed to keep the gate closed (addressed by the Manager during the inspection)
