• EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

  A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

  Observation. The following was observed: -children's tables are showing signs of chipping on the surfaces and edges -in the indoor playroom, there is a mesh gate that zips closed. This gate is ripped which could cause injury and presents an entrapment space. It may also allow the children access to the areas along the windows where blind cords are accessible and the window sills are not clean

  Corrective action. Please ensure all furniture and equipment are in good repair to allow for proper cleaning and safe use. It is understandable that replacing or repairing the above items may take some time. Please provide a plan by November 10, 2023.

  A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): In the outdoor playground, a used vape was observed on the ledge next to a fence post along the parking lot. It was removed by staff when it was pointed out.

  Corrective action. Please ensure that a thorough check is done of the playground prior to use every time.

• STAFFING

  A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

  Observation. 4 staff files were reviewed and 1 has an expired criminal record clearance letter.

  Corrective action. Please ensure criminal record checks are valid within the last 5 years. Staff explained they had applied for a new one and it may not have been printed and put in the file.

• STAFFING

  A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility as (a) an educator or an assistant unless the person holds a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the licensee using a system established and maintained by the director of the early childhood educator registry,

  Observation. Four staff files were reviewed and 2 do not have current validation of certificates. Certificates are posted in the facility but validation must be done as well through the ECE Registry website.

  Corrective action. Please ensure all staff certificates are validated prior to working and as well after renewals.

  A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

  Observation. Four staff files were reviewed and one does not have a current cleared criminal record check letter on file. Manager stated that one was applied for and a current one may be at the head office.

  Corrective action. Please ensure all staff have cleared criminal record check letters that are up to date.
