  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. - a can of aerosol sunscreen in a side pocket of a backpack on the ground near where children were accessing their water bottles - a child putting rhododendrum leaves in their mouth which are toxic

    Corrective action. The manager spoke to all of the children to let them know that the leaves are toxic and removed the sunscreen from children's reach. The manager will limit the area where children play in the unfenced, unlicensed forested area to ensure that children do not have access to any toxic plants..

  • OR SUPERVISION

    A licensee must (a) ensure that behavioural guidance is appropriate to the age and development of the child who is receiving the guidance.

    Observation. The manager stopped a child who was running by grabbing their arm which could pose a risk of injury.

    Corrective action. The manager said that she will get in front of the child and on their level rather than reaching for them. In addition, the program will add boundaries and reduce the area where children are playing in the unfenced forested area to aid supervision and will review programming to ensure that children are engaged.

  • POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. The manager explained that in addition to emergency supplies and water, the program has 3 cans of food, which is not sufficient to recover from any emergency.

    Corrective action. The facility will ensure to obtain sufficient food to recover from any emergency.

  • Without limiting subsection (1), a licensee must ensure that (b) the ratio of employees to children attending a community care facility is no less than that permitted in Schedule E.

    Observation. The facility did not have sufficient staffing on two dates in September.

    Corrective action. The licensee confirmed that the program has been in compliance with CCLR Schedule E since October 1 and will ensure that the correct ratio is maintained at all times.

    Corrective action. Ensure to obtain a site specific CRC for all staff prior to employment.

    Observation. Of the three staff files reviewed; one did not include ECE validation through the ECE Registry.

    Corrective action. Ensure to obtain ECE validation for staff prior to employment.
