  • NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICES / NutritionNon-critical

Instructions in a child's record or care plan respecting food and drink for the child are followed. [CCLR Sec.48(2)]

Observation. Care plans are clearly posted and updated in the kitchen and the child's files. Staff strive to keep documents updated and remind families of expiry dates. Noted that one child's medicine is labeled and clipped to the outing back pack. One child has a carry plan - keeps epipen in back pack and it travels back and forth from home to school to child care. This is an acceptable practice but requires diligence on the part of family and staff to check that the epipen is in back pack upon arrival. I inquired about whether anyone had checked this morning. Inquiry came up because the care plan indicated the epipen expired August 2025. Perhaps the family had a new one in the back pack, in which case we need to update the care plan. No one had checked the back pack yet. When staff checked, the child did not have the epipen in back pack. Child has an allergy to cow's milk and the centre does not offer any dairy products so the risk for today can be managed. However this would not be the case if the allergy was environmental, e.g. wasp/ bee stings, in which case care could not be provided until such time as an epipen was provided. Lead staff stated they would speak with the family and staff and ensure the epipen prescribed is updated.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical

The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction.  They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]

Observation. Upstairs - Kindergarten / Grade one program The crank handle on the pop out window in the kindergarten / grade one room is broken and has been for some time. A work order has been submitted but not yet acted on. There is a sign warning folks not to use the window to prevent further damage. Noted a unit over 4 feet in the shared junior K / Kindergarten / grade one room. At present no heavy or breakable objects are stored on this unit. Discussed with Manager and staff member the general guide is that anything 4 feet and above should be attached to the wall to prevent tipping hazard or injury in case of earthquake. This can be difficult if the walls are brick or concrete. Given the age of the children in care in this room and that staff are not storing heavy or breakable objects on the shelving unit (some clothing stored on the bottom shelves), it is unlikely to be a high risk, safety hazard. However care should be taken in future to ensure items are 4 feet and above are secured in some way. Manager and staff said they would take this under consideration and discuss the use of this unit. Room 1 and 2 Noted that one of the drawers in the pretend unit is off the rails. Manager said that they have in house support to fix this. Noted that the seating unit with shelving is structurally in fine shape but the vinyl cover on the foam cushion is completely worn away. Staff have been staple gunning fabric on top but it is nigh impossible to keep this clean. It would be a shame to have to replace the unit just because the cushions are glued on. Said I would leave this with the Manager and team for consideration and a solution by next routine inspection.
