  • NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICES / NutritionNon-critical

Instructions in a child's record or care plan respecting food and drink for the child are followed. [CCLR Sec.48(2)]

Observation. Any child requiring a care plan based on food / drink, has one in place. There are care plans posted on inside wall of kitchen above the locked cabinet with medication. Any allergies / sensitivities or special diets are posted on the fridge in the activity room. We went through the medication and care plans to ensure all were up to date. Noted that one epipen expired on December 31, 2025. The child was not in today. Manager said they would follow up right away with parents and ensure updated epipen is in place. Manager said the child also carries an epipen on their body via a fanny pack. Manager will check the epipen in the fanny pack (when child returns) to ensure that one is updated as well. If that one is current, then program can wait for second epipen for YMCA program. Bottom line is ensuring the child has a current epipen accessible during School Age program. Manager will confirm with CCFL when she has this information and can confirm compliance. Discussion the number of children in school age care going through desensitization protocols for allergies and how to address that within regulatory framework if child has a epipen and care plan.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical

The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction.  They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]

Observation. Observed staff wiping down furniture during set up and observed that furnishing and equipment in general is in satisfactory condition. Area carpets were observed to be clean and in good condition. Washrooms were found to be in satisfactory condition, except for water temperature (mentioned elsewhere in the report). Reviewed cleaning schedules and checklist records with Manager. Noted that the record indicates staff are sweeping every day, wiping down surfaces and vacuuming area carpets as per YMCA protocols. Discussed the build up/ debris around the edges of the multi purpose room, condition of adjacent kitchen & hand sink area outside of room. Manager informed me that the multi purpose room is rarely wet mopped. Sweeping cannot address spills or sticky spots that occur during the school day. Inquired about when the space last received a deep clean and who was responsible. Inquired as to whether there was an agreement with VSB school custodian regarding expectations for the school age spaces. Manager reported that all school age spaces are also used by the school as well as parent group users such as on pizza day. Manager stated she had spoken with the principal on more than one occasion regarding the standard of cleaning. The principal has spoken with custodian but there has been no change. Manager spoke of having to deep clean the large 3 compartment sink in the kitchen, removing build up grease and grime, after other users. The counter, cabinet and sink outside the multi purpose room plus the surrounding wall and floor requires a deep clean. It is an older school and it is not reasonable to expect that we can turn back the hands of time. However the areas mentioned above require greater attention. Manager and staff team appear to be following Licensee expectations regarding their role and practice in cleaning and maintenance. Given the multiple users, CCFL would estimate that with the School Age's daily cleaning (as per the YMCA checklist) and if current users clean up after their own use (e.g. parent groups, staff), a deep clean may only be required once or twice a month. CCFL strongly advises the YMCA to consult with the school, other users and custodians to work out an understanding re this matter.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Heated WaterNon-critical

Heated water accessible to children is heated to no more than 49° Celsius. [CCLR Sec. 47]

Observation. Today there was a tangible difference between the water temperature at the sinks in the boys washroom and the girls. The boys washroom water temperature was reasonable tepid/ warm to encourage effective hand washing. The girls washroom water temperature was ice cold, unlikely to encourage effective hand washing. Important, especially during cold and flu season, that warm water is provided to encourage hand washing.
