Health & safety record

No critical violations on record. 4 non-critical findings noted since 2021.

June 15, 2026Routine1 non-critical
  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical

The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]

Observation. The children from the Juniper (JK) and Blossom (3 to 5) rooms explore the outdoor play yards, the school yard and the surrounding neighborhood. Walks in these programs are referred to as "adventures" and intentionally planned. Observed free flow indoors and out in both the JK and 3 to 5 programs today. Manager and educators are monitoring the depth of fibar and the condition/ depth of sand in all yards, including JK and 3 -5 ards. Discussed with Manager the composition of current sand is coarse and grainy. It may allow for satisfying digging but is not conducive to molding. Recommended digging out and discarding the current sand prior to receiving the next batch. Topping up the existing sand just perpetuates the issue. Digging out and discarding allows for a cleansing of the area and then replacing with high quality river washed sand that supports digging, molding and construction. CCFL is ready to discuss potential sources when Village is ready to replace. 3 to 5 / Blossom yard Observed two small emerging hazards to address including the settling of the clatter bridge resulting in raised screws (possible tripping hazard) and one loose screw on the top ladder rung (right hand side/ not the ships ladder) just before entry to the play structure platform.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical

The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction.  They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]

Observation. Juniper Berries / School Age room The crank handle on the pop out window in the kindergarten / grade one room is broken and has been for some time. A work order has been submitted but not yet acted on. There is a sign warning folks not to use the window to prevent further damage. Noted a unit over 4 feet in the shared junior K / Kindergarten / grade one room. At present no heavy or breakable objects are stored on this unit. Discussed with Manager and staff member the general guide is that anything 4 feet and above should be attached to the wall to prevent tipping hazard or injury in case of earthquake. This can be difficult if the walls are brick or concrete. Given the age of the children in care in this room and that staff are not storing heavy or breakable objects on the shelving unit (some clothing stored on the bottom shelves) AND the location next to a table that would break the fall if it did topple, it is unlikely to be a high risk, safety hazard. However care should be taken in future to ensure items are 4 feet and above are secured in some way. Discussed this with the Manager today and reflected on the conversation with the school age folk from Monday's inspection. Overall the furnishings and equipment, etc. are in satisfactory condition. Some wood pieces are wearing better than others. Manager and staff teams are monitoring. Observed that on the washroom stalls with doors, there are hooks to hold the doors open. Manager stated some children feel closed in and isolated in the closed stall and want the door open. Having the door open for the younger children (versus school age) means that staff can hear anyone needing assistance. Outdoors - Discussed with manager which vegetation was thriving and which required attention. We noted that two trees are showing signs of ill health (fungus?). Manager will follow up with the neighbourhood house and see if there is a master gardener that could advise. Please inform CCFL if the trees need to be replaced and we can offer support.
