  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

Observation. The following was observed in the outdoor play space: -The garden beds accessible to the children have multiple, large prickly weeds in them posing a risk to children if they were to touch them or fall into them. -On the west side of the playground, the fence on the neighboring property runs parallel to the facility fence. It sits at a much higher level than the facility fence. This neighboring fence is broken in spots and is leaning over into the facility play space. It is a concern that at some point this fence or a portion of this fence could fall into the facility play space where children play. When Licensing initiated a conversation with the facility operations manager she agreed that this was a concern and had recently brought this concern to the landlords attention.

Corrective action. Ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided outdoors by removing all the prickly weeds and creating an action plan to address the fence on the neighboring premise to ensure it is secure and will not fall into the facility outdoor play space.

  • OR SUPERVISION

A licensee must ensure that children are adequately supervised by qualified employees in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of each child.

Observation. In one of the 30 months to age rooms there were 17 children with one educator, one assistant and one responsible adult. This does not meet the child care licensing regulations staffing requirements. In one of the under 3 rooms there were 11 children with one infant and toddler educator and two assistants. This does not meet the child care licensing regulations staffing requirements.

Corrective action. Ensure children are adequately supervised by qualified employees as per Schedule E in the child care licensing regulations.
