  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed children playing on the rooftop playground in the direct sunlight and there was insufficient shade provided to protect children from sunburn and sunstroke. The Manager explained that a shade tent broke 3-4 weeks ago. An application has been in place for a couple of months since the beginning of June to obtain funding for a more durable product to provide shade. Staff are checking UV index and temperatures to time outdoor play.

    Corrective action. The manager will provide a temporary shade solution in the interim to ensure that children have sufficient shade.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - areas of flooring with gaps and areas that are taped - a heavily damaged (bent aluminum slats) mini blind within children's reach in an IT room

    Corrective action. The Manager removed the mini blind from children's reach during the inspection and confirmed that there is a plan to repair damaged flooring.

    Observation. Four staff files were reviewed. Two staff files had reference names and phone numbers; however, the manager said that she had only spoken to one reference for each staff. A record was not kept.

    Corrective action. The manager will ensure to obtain a minimum of two references for each staff prior to employment.

    Observation. In the lower playground there is orange fencing that is falling over and posing entrapment hazards. Licensing took a photo and a copy will be provided to the facility.

Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed the following: - a diaper change mat with small tears on the end covered with peeling tape; this does not allow for the mat to be cleaned and sanitized adequately. The manager replaced the change mat during the inspection.

Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed a lamp attached to the wall, plugged into an outlet lower on the wall in a nap room. The cord was unsecured and within children's reach posing a potential risk of entanglement. A staff removed the cord from children's reach during the insepction.

    A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (b) located so as not to block or hamper an exit in the case of fire or other emergency.

    Observation. Licensing observed that the fire escape route that leads downstairs at the south side of the building, was obstructed with supplies and equipment. This is a concern should this route be required during an evacuation.

    Corrective action. Please ensure emergency exits remain clear at all times

    Observation. Licensing observed the following : - The kitchen door was left open and was vacant for a short time period and there were two pots of food cooking on the stove top. This room is accessible to children from the Group Child Care (30 months to school age). This was discussed as a hazard with the chef on site who said she would close the door in future when she vacates the kitchen. - The sprinkler room, electrical room and area containing paint cans was observed to be accessible to children due to a fire door left open at the bottom of a fire escape staircase.

    Corrective action. Please ensure hazardous materials are not accessible to children at any time.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - A blind cord was loosely dangling in room 2 which was accessible to the children - Room 3 has balls suspended from the ceiling by nylon strings, at different lengths that the children can tap and walk through or reach for. This poses a strangulation hazard. Manager said they would be taken down today.

    Corrective action. Please ensure a safe environment for children at all times.

  • HYGIENE AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): Licensing observed the diapering practice where a child did not wash hands after a diaper change. Discussed the procedure with the staff to ensure good practices are in place for educating children as well as preventing cross contamination. Licensing also observed that there were no paper towels in the Group Child Care (30 months to school age) program. Manager explained that this was usually checked at the end of every day and perhaps overlooked.

    Corrective action. Please ensure hygiene practices and are in place at all times, particularly during Covid - 19.
