  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. In the children’s bathroom, the washbasin countertop surface was broken along the edges, making sanitization difficult. In both classrooms, the walls and floor moldings in high-traffic areas at children’s height had several sections with chipped and peeling paint, stains & debris build-up. In the 3–5 program: -carpet in the play area was buckled in three areas, posing a potential tripping hazard. -duct tape used to secure the carpet in the main play area had peeled off in some sections and had a build-up of dust and debris stuck on it.

    Corrective action. Manager took photos of the above items and said they will be addressed during the winter break.

  • MEDICATION

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (b) readily accessible to employees. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): One child's emergency medication was not readily accessible to staff during outdoor play. Manager corrected this during inspection.

    Corrective action. The manager said staff will take the medication with them for outdoor play from now on.

    Observation. A minimum of two character references were not obtained for one volunteer.

    Corrective action. The Manager advised that she will obtain 2 character reverences from the volunteer.

    Observation. Licensing reviewed 3 staff files and one staff was missing record of 2 character references. The Manager said that this staff was previously employed.

    Corrective action. The Manager advised that she will obtain 2 character references for this staff.

    Observation. one staff was missing a record of a criminal record check (CRC) clearance letter from the criminal record check review program. They have one on file from the RCMP and the Manager advised that the staff applied for the CRC.

    Corrective action. Please ensure CRC's are obtained through the criminal record check clearance program upon employment.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During inspection it was found that: - Gyprock was exposed in several areas on the Infant room. - In all 3 of the facility classrooms, there were sharp edges of wooden baseboard exposed and accessible to children.

    Without limiting subsection (1), a licensee must ensure that (b) the ratio of employees to children attending a community care facility is no less than that permitted in Schedule E.

    Observation. During inspection in the infant program Licensing observed that the staffing did not meet CCLR Schedule E. There were 8 children with one Infant and Toddler Educator and one Early Childhood Assistant. As per Schedule E there must be one Infant and Toddler educator and one Early Childhood Educator. The Manager stated this is the facilities current staffing plan for the afternoons. Licensing discussed the ability to apply for an Exemption to be in compliance with Schedule E.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that the ratio of employees to children is no less than that permitted in Schedule E.

    Observation. Upon review of daily attendance records, it was observed that one child in the toddler program did not have a departure time for February 1, 2022. The Manager stated that staff have been noting arrival and departure times on the sign in/out sheets.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. In all 3 of the facility classrooms, it was found that areas of the walls have holes and chipped paint exposing the drywall. This is a repeat non compliance. The Licensing officer did observe that areas of the wall have been repaired and there appears to be work done at times to address this challenge.

    Corrective action. Ensure the walls are in good repair ongoing.

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    Observation. During inspection of the outdoor play space it was found that a new piece of climbing equipment had been installed. The piece of equipment is located close to the fence and other obstacles in the playground.

    Corrective action. Ensure all climbing equipment has 1.8 meters (6 feet) clearance all around it.
