- RECORDS AND REPORTING / Care PlansNon-critical
For each child requiring extra support, the licensee keeps a current care plan showing the required information. [CCLR Sec. 58(1)(2)]
Observation. Licensing observed one Anaphylaxis care plan in place that had the use of 5 ml Claritin as a first step for an allergic reaction, and the Epi Pen as the second step if the allergic reaction does not resolve. A discussion was held with staff and the Manager regarding the following: Epinephrine is the first line medication which should be used for the emergency management of a person having a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. The course of an anaphylactic episode cannot be predicted with certainty at the onset. Epinephrine should be given at the start of a known or suspected anaphylactic reaction. Antihistamines should not be used instead of epinephrine for treating anaphylaxis as they have not been proven to stop an anaphylactic reaction. Epinephrine is the only treatment shown to stop an anaphylactic reaction. Vancouver Coastal Health does not support the use of antihistamines in a child care anaphylaxis emergency plan. Resources to support the above information were e-mailed to the facility to share with parents.
