  • MEDICATION / MedicationNon-critical

Medications that staff have agreed to administer are readily accessible to staff and are administered in the correct dosage at the correct times. [CCLR Sec. 53(1)]

Observation. One child who attends the afternoon preschool had an Epi Pen on site that expired January 2022.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTING / Care PlansNon-critical

For each child requiring extra support, the licensee keeps a current care plan showing the required information. [CCLR Sec. 58(1)(2)]

Observation. Licensing observed outdated Anaphylaxis care plans in place. Licensing observed a ziplock bag containing Benadryl and an Epi pen for one child. Their Epi Pen was expired and their care plan said to administer Benadryl and had no information regarding the Epi Pen. Licensing observed another ziplock bag containing Claritin and an Epi Pen for another child. Their care plan had no information regarding the Epi Pen. A discussion was held that Epinephrine is the first line medication which should be used for the emergency management of a person having a potentially life threatening allergic reaction. Antihistamines (e.g. Benadryl, Claritin) medications should not be used instead of epinephrine for treating anaphylaxis. Centres should have a system to track Epi Pen expiry dates to ensure current medications are in place.
