• EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

  A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

  Observation. In one of the classrooms cleaning supplies were stored in an unlocked cupboard accessible to the children and in the outdoor play space there was a pest control box that stated, 'Caution, do not touch,' on it.

  Corrective action. The Manager stated that the items would be moved to alternate spots immediately.

• STAFFING

  A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

  Observation. Licensing reviewed three staff files. A Criminal Record Check has expired for one staff.

  Corrective action. The facility will apply for the criminal record check.

• STAFFING

  A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility as (a) an educator or an assistant unless the person holds a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the system maintained by the early childhood educator registry. (Educator or assistant certificate validation)

  Observation. Licensing reviewed three staff files. Two Early Childhood Educator certificates have not been verified through the Early Childhood Educator registry.

  Corrective action. The facility will validate the Early Childhood Educator certificates.

• EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

  A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

  Observation. Licensing observed a number of bins and baskets with extra toys, supplies and other items stored high on top of cupboards. The storage of heavy items on high shelves may topple over and fall on a child.

  Corrective action. Please ensure bins are secured to reduce the risk of a heavy bin from falling on a child.
