Observation. Outdoor play space is on the south side of the building with no shade, exposing the children to direct sun. Most of the ground surfacing is made up of artificial turf which does not absorb the heat like real grass, adding to the issue. Program operates in the afternoons and therefore is not able to schedule outdoor time during cooler hours of the day. During today's visit with temperatures in the high 20s, staff were visibly uncomfortable and many of the children were complaining of the heat. With temperatures rising earlier in the year and expanding into the fall, this issue will be a continued problem even though the program does not run through the summer months.
