  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. - Free standing shelves in playroom and outside, as well as cubbies in the main play area not secured to the wall posing a risk of tipping. - Through discussion with the staff it was determined that the napping mats and playpens are not regularly sanitized. - The cloths used to wipe children's hands and faces, along with kitchen towels and soft toys are not laundered in an appropriate manner.

    Corrective action. Ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. - The walls through out the facility are showing signs of wear and tear with some exposed drywall. - There is no system in place to ensure the outdoor play space is free from hazards.

    Corrective action. Ensure the necessary repairs are done to ensure an environment that is clean and in good repair. Develop a daily, monthly and annual check list to ensure the outdoor play space in free from hazards.

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. Licensing observed hazardous cleaners accessible to children both under the bathroom sink and in the eating area.

    Corrective action. Ensure children do not have access to substances that may be hazardous to children.

  • MEDICATION

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (a) administered to the child in the amount and at the times specified by the child's parent or in the child's record or care plan.

    Observation. One child's file was missing a medical consent form for a medication found on site for the treatment of an allergy.

    Corrective action. Ensure any medications provided by parents include a signed consent specifying the amount and time given.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that any heated water accessible to children is heated to no more than 49° Celsius.

    Observation. Licensing used a digital thermometer to test the water temperature, which reads 59.2 degrees Celcius after 45 seconds.

    Corrective action. Children are supervised while washing hands. Please make sure the temperature is less than 49 degrees celcius when accessible to children.

    Observation. Licensing reviewed four staff records of which three were certified through the Registry. Validations were expired for two of the three and one was missing.

    Corrective action. Manager will renew validations and place a copy in each staff file.

    Observation. A medication authorization form for a child stated the medication is to be given "as needed". There are no specific instructions letting staff know when to give the medication.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that there are specific instructions directing staff when to administer medication to a child. Staff were able to describe symptoms the child would display when the medication had to be administered.

    Without limiting subsection (1), a licensee must ensure that (b) the ratio of employees to children attending a community care facility is no less than that permitted in Schedule E.

    Observation. A staff person present during this inspection was replacing an ECE staff. This person stated they were taking their ECEA courses but do not have their certificate yet. The minimum requirements of a staff person replacing an ECE is an ECEA therefore the staffing requirements of the Child Care Licensing Regulation are not being met.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that staffing meets the requirements of Schedule E CCLR including Section 37 Absent employees.

    Observation. Files for 10 children were reviewed. The name and contact information for a doctor (or walk in medical clinic) and for an emergency contact person was not available for three children.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that all children's files contain contact information for a doctor or medical clinic and an emergency contact person.
