  • CARE AND/OR SUPERVISION / Group Sizes and Employee to Children RatiosNon-critical

Children are adequately supervised by qualified employees in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of each child. [CCLR Sec.34(1)]

Observation. At today's inspection the Manager reported to the LO that they were working with 1 permanent staff (who is completing a gradual return to work) , 1 other permanent staff was away on vacation and there is a vacant position for the last permanent staff position. The facility is filling the staffing gaps with substitute/casual staff. A Manager from another Collingwood Neighbourhood House facility was present today assisting the Manager at Sarah's House. The LO observed 5 staff persons in ratio as the program transitioned to nap/rest time. 1 staff then went on break, leaving 4 staff. Staff were assisting a number of children who were having difficulty in the transition to nap/rest. One child was observed rolling, running and not wanting to lie on mat. This child was eventually offered table time with playdoh and they settled into quiet play. 1 staff person was then asked to locate to the kitchen area to allow supervision of the child.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical

All indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are suitable for the age and development of the children, safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair. [CCLR Sec. 16(4)]

Observation. At the August 22/23 Routine inspection the wooden log climber was observed to have two rotten logs at the top that have exposed splintered wood. At that time the staff had closed off the area so that children could not access. The Licensee was required to send a corrective measures plan by September 1/23 that outlined what action will be taken to prevent children accessing and when the repair/replacement will be completed. No corrective measures plan has been received. Children can access the top of the climber. The top of the climber was observed to be slippery after heavy rain and if a child slips on the surface there is risk of impaling body on exposed wood spikes.

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Safe Play Space Standard of PracticeNon-critical

Ground Surfacing: The playground surface is free of standing water and debris. [Director of Licensing Standard of Practice - Safe Play Space]

Observation. At today's inspection a large puddle of water was observed in the cement area of the outdoor play area. The playground surface is required to be free of standing water.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTING / Care PlansNon-critical

The licensee does not record compliance with the care plan of a child requiring extra support respecting any behavioural guidance provided to the child, and its effect. [CCLR Sec. 58(3)(d)]

Observation. 1 Care Plan examined today was developed with the child care staff and parent only.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTING / Care PlansNon-critical

For each child requiring extra support, the care plan does not show the diagnoses relevant to the child's requirement for extra support, as made by health care professionals. [CCLR Sec.58(1)(a)] ; For each child requiring extra support, the care plan does not show the courses of action recommended by health care professionals to address the needs of the child requiring extra support. [CCLR Sec.58(1)(b)] ; Care plans are not reviewed at least once a year with a parent of the child requiring extra support and any person requested by the parent. [CCLR Sec. 58(2)(b)]

Observation. At today's inspection the LO inspected the Care Plans the are current at the facility. See the attached comments for Sections of the Care Plans missing and therefore NIC.

After being on the waitlist for nearly two years, I finally got the call that a space had opened up at Sarah House for my son. The timing couldn't have been more perfect. His previous family daycare was closing, and we needed somewhere new. Admittedly, I was skeptical at first. My son had loved his previous daycare, which had a smaller, more personal feel, and he struggles with transitions and new environments. Plus, there weren’t many recent or detailed reviews online, and a few older negative ones left me uncertain. But out of necessity and hope, we gave Sarah House a chance. The transition wasn’t easy. There was some staff turnover in the beginning, and that lack of consistency made it difficult for my son to feel comfortable. He didn’t socialize, wasn’t participating in group activities, and hadn’t built connections with any of the staff. However, things improved significantly after a new program coordinator came in and the team of teachers became more stable. The changes brought structure and predictability, which was exactly what my son needed. Since then, he has truly thrived. He’s made friends, grown more confident, and developed strong relationships with his teachers. One teacher even noticed his interest in math and would take the time to write out problems for him to solve. That kind of attention and care has meant so much to both of us. The staff are dedicated and genuinely care about the children. Now, as my older son graduates from Sarah House and prepares for Kindergarten, I feel incredibly grateful for the strong foundation they helped build during these crucial early years. I’m also happy to say that my younger son will be starting at Sarah House this year. Great program, great staff, great community. We’re truly lucky to be part of it.

I saw these children at the park. The kid to teacher ratio was 7 to 1. Way too many kids for that age per teacher. One teacher in particular was overly controlling and quite harsh in her words, concerning to think what is said when not in public to these little kids. I would not be comfortable with my child in that daycare.
