  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical

All indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are suitable for the age and development of the children, safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair. [CCLR Sec. 16(4)]

Observation. In the outdoor play space, the wooden retaining wall of the sandbox is damaged on one side, with screws exposed. The Manager confirmed that the area will be closed until repairs to the wood are completed. In areas of the facility within reach of children, paint has chipped from the walls, exposing porous drywall, which may affect the surface’s ability to be effectively cleaned. The Manager noted that these areas are scheduled for repair.

  • POLICIES AND PROCEDURES / Community Care Facility RecordsNon-critical

The policies and procedures referred to in subsection 1 are implemented by the employees.

Observation. As discussed in a prior inspection, it is important for staff to understand and then appropriately implement the policies and procedures. The licensee has made some progress in ensuring that staff have read the facility policies and procedures and has provided some additional information (such as emails sent to staff with videos of suggested practice) regarding expectations for staff in their interactions with and supervision of children. This is an ongoing process in order to make sure staff really understand the expectations. Licensing will come back in the next several weeks with an expectation that staff are implementing the updated policies and procedures.
