- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical
The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction. They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]
Observation. Licensing observed an unsecured shelf over 4 feet in height in the facility. A discussion occurred with the Licensee regarding anchoring the shelf to mitigate the tipping hazard.
- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Play Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical
The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]
Observation. Licensing observed the following: - A lock on the gate leading to the main road is installed on the inside of the fence and is potentially accessible to children. A discussion occurred with the Licensee and they committed to moving the lock to the outside of the fence where is not accessible to children. - The area between the wooden fence and the chain-link fence in the south-east corner of the outdoor play space has an opening leading to a long off-site space between the chain-link fence and the neighbouring yard’s wooden fence. A discussion occurred with the Licensee that this opening must be immediately blocked for the outside play space to be considered enclosed. The Licensee committed to blocking it prior to children attending the following day. - A large rock area in the outdoor play space has thorny debris from a removed plant. A discussion occurred with the Licensee that children should not play in this area until the thorny debris has been removed. - The area in the north-west corner of the outdoor play space has limited supervision sight lines. In the same corner, there is access to stairs leading to an upstairs residential patio through an open side. The elevated grass area from the main play space also leads to an alternate gate that could potentially be climbed over, which leads to the street. A discussion occurred with the Licensee that this area should not be accessed by children and that the area must be vigilantly supervised. A plan must be developed to permanently reduce these risks. - The sandbox area adjacent to the patio has concrete retaining blocks that wobble when touched. A discussion occurred with the Licensee to address this issue, and the Licensee committed to moving the sandbox in the meantime.
