- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical
A healthy and safe environment is provided at all times [CCLR Sec. 13(1)].
Observation. Discussion with the Manager about how the children access the outdoor play space. LO confirmed that using the back stairs that lead to the fully fenced outdoor play space is the best practice. On inspection today the children's handrail wood is breaking down and children are at risk of getting splinters/cut. The stairs have 1 non-slip thread at the front of the stair. To prevent slips the stairs should have a full non-slip material installed/or more of the stair with non-slip material.

- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / EnvironmentNon-critical
The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction. They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]
Observation. At the North end of the outside of the house there is an old pipe sticking out that has been covered by tape. The staff report the children pull at the tape and allow the pipe to be exposed. At the North end of the outside of the house on the ground there are several large nails that appear to be covering a wood piece. These nails are tripping hazards. At the West end of the house there are several metal mesh covers that are stapled into the wood to cover areas of rotting wood. One of the mesh covers has pulled away, exposing rotting wood and allowing rodents to access.
- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHING / Furniture, Equipment and FixturesNon-critical
Equipment, furniture and supplies are located so as not to block or hamper exits in the case of fire or other emergency. [CCLR Sec. 15(1)(b)]
Observation. The outdoor play area gate (that leads to the parking lot) is a second method of egress out of the building in case of fire or emergency. The tree in the parking lot has roots that have buckled the pavement. This pavement is impeding the gate opening easily. The staff demonstrated that they have to pull or push the gate to get it fully opened. Once the children/staff get out of the gate there is a large crack in the pavement that could interfere with easy evacuation.

Prior to employing staff the manager has met with each person and has obtained the appropriate documentation. [CCLR Sec. 19(1)]
