    Observation. LO RC and LO-IT LA observed an open bag of ice melting salts placed in the coat area next to the main entrance, accessible to children.

    All indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are suitable for the age and development of the children, safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair. [CCLR Sec. 16(4)]

    Observation. Staff inform the the wooden steps leading up to the sandbox are narrow, and due to the rounded first step, adults and children often slip and fall. This issue has been brought up to meetings and management staff, with work orders submitted to install grip strips and possibly sanding of the step to level so it is not rounded. Staff are exercising caution around the steps, and diligent in assisting children in the meantime.

    Observation. Licensing observed several children to be missing start dates, and medical practitioner information.

    Implementation of the fire drill system is practiced at least once each month, and implementation of the emergency plan is practiced at least once each year. [CCLR Sec. 22(2)(b)(c)]

    Observation. Fire drills have been implemented and recorded monthly. Staff inform that the Earthquake drill was missed with the rest of UBC in October, but plan to implement their own.

    Medications that staff have agreed to administer are readily accessible to staff and are administered in the correct dosage at the correct times. [CCLR Sec. 53(1)]

    Observation. *An epi-pen and asthma medication required for treatment as per the instructions in a care plan were not on site. The educators stated that the family may have forgotten to send the medications that day. *An epi-pen required for treatment as per the instructions in a care plan expired February 2023.

    Observation. *A loose and unsecured cord for a floor lamp was observed in the small gross motor room. *A blind cord in the nap room was hanging down loose and accessible. *The passageway /storage room between Raven and the connected program is stacked up high with some large equipment that is not currently in use. A discussion was had with educators that because the doors must remain unsecured to allow passage between programs, the stored items pose a potential tipping hazard as children can easily access the area. *Educator's personal bags were stored on the office floor which was open at the time of inspection. Adult's personal belongings may contain items hazardous to children such as medications.

    Observation. *Fridge temperature= 0'C- good! *Licensing observed blind cords in the second large room that were unsecured and accessible to the children. This poses a risk of entanglement. *Licensing observed a storage closet with two connecting doors. One door was observed to be unlocked. Licensing observed a large power cord attached to a stereo hanging down from a shelf. Licensing was informed that this storage door is kept unlocked as it is a pathway used for staff to connect to an attached program. A discussion was held about the power cord hanging down and the risk of injury.
