    Observation. A garden suite is being built at the back of the home. Staff did not notify Licensing of this structural change, as required.

    Observation. The front steps are broken, the pathway leading to the front steps is not safe due to construction work, and construction materials are being stored in front of the garage, which is accessible to children.

    A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (b) located so as not to block or hamper an exit in the case of fire or other emergency.

    Observation. Items were observed to be stored in the door way, stacked high on shelves lining the walkway and in the center of the garage and pose a hazard to children who may need to use this pathway to exit the home because of an emergency.

    Corrective action. Ensure items are stored in the garage in a way that does not block or present a danger to children who may need to exit the home because of an emergency.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    Observation. The following was observed in the backyard play area: -The basketball hoop has a cracked base and requires replacement. -The outdoor climbing dome does not have resilient surfacing or a 6 foot radius that is clear of objects around the structure - The climber and swing set does not have resilient surfacing in the fall zones with the exception of the bottom of the slide. - The climber and swing set does not have a 6 foot radius that is clear around the structure. This structure is not in good repair and requires repair or replacement.

    Corrective action. - Ensure there is sufficient resilient surfacing for climbing structures to prevent injury from a fall. - Ensure there is a clear radius of 6 feet clear of objects around climbing structures to prevent injury. - Ensure equipment used by children in care is in good repair.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. The following was observed: - Shelving and/or items not secured - Items are stacked and unsecured behind a curtain in the nap room and poses a potential falling hazard - Items are stacked and unsecured in the playroom behind a curtain in 2 separate places. Items stacked present a potential falling hazard. Additional items are stored under the children's play table and should be stored away from play. - Wrapping paper and equipment are stored in the shower stall and covered by a curtain. These items should not be stored in the shower. - a large amount of items are stored in the garage and prevents children from accessing the outdoor play area because it is unsafe for children to travel through this area because the itmes are stacked up on top of surfaces and present a potential of falling if disturbed.

    Corrective action. Ensure the environment is clean, clear and safe for children in care

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. The following was observed during inspection: - Areas of the facility were not clean, including the sink and toilet in the children's washroom, the play area where excess toys and materials are stored including under the children's table, the garage where children were expected to travel to the back yard. - The alternate route that children must take to access the backyard has materials stored and gardening waste stacked that presents a hazard to children in care. The temporary fencing in this area does not have a proper gate and is difficult to access and is not in good repair. - The fencing along the back of the property is not in good repair.

    Corrective action. - Ensure the facility is clean and clear from excess toys and supplies - Ensure the fencing including the gate is replaced or in good repair.

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. The facility has emergency supplies but are insufficient to implement the emergency plan

    Observation. A review of facility files found that there were no attendance records kept for March and April and for most of May.

    Corrective action. Ensure daily attendance records are kept.

    A licensee must ensure that children have at all times immediate access to an employee who (a) holds a valid first aid and CPR certificate, provided on completion of a course that meets the requirements of Schedule C.

    Observation. Children are transported to and from school a few times a week by someone who does not have first aid qualifications.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that children have access to someone with first aid at all times.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

    Observation. Children are transported to and from school by an adult who does have a cleared police check. However, a clearance check is required to be done through the Ministry.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the correct criminal record check is conducted for staff.

    Observation. During the inspection of the outdoor are it was noted that the stairs leading to the second floor had an open gate allowing access to a hot tub filled with water. The hot tub was covered, however the hot tub presents a hazard to young children. This is a repeat contravention.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Upon inspecting the physical facility the following were observed. - The upper fence on the right (East) side of the play back yard was in need of repair. When gently pushed on it, it moved to the point of falling, causing potential injury. - The lower play area had some cracks in it and weeds were growing promoting a tripping hazard. - The rad in the bathroom was rusted and paint was chipping. - The paint in the nap room was chipped and dry wall was exposed.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the facility, equipment, and fixtures within it are in good repair while children are in attendance.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - The fridge used to store children's lunches and snacks was above 4 degrees celcius - The fridge door is broken and a large piece of tape is being used to keep the door shut - The dishwasher used to clean children's dishes and sanitize toys is broken - The diaper change pad is showing signs of wear and the surface cannot be disinfected properly

    Corrective action. Please ensure the furniture, equipment and fixtures are clean and in good repair.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - Children's personal belongings that are hung in the cubby area are touching eachother, increasing the risk for the spread of bacteria - Arrival and departure occurs inside the facility and social distancing measures are not being maintained - Paper blocks are one of the toys the children enjoy playing with daily. The blocks are made of paper products and cannot be disinfected efficiently. Other large plastic block items were suggested to the licensee. - A daily wellness screening to confirm no symptoms of cold, flu, Covid-19 or respiratory disease is not being done

    Corrective action. Please ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - The kitchen cabinet which contained bleach and plastic bags was unlocked and accessible to the children - An adult knife was placed on the dish drying rack which was accessible to the children

    The licensee must not permit a person over the age of 12 to be ordinarily present on the premises of a community care facility while children are present, unless the person is of good character and the licensee has obtained a criminal record check for that person.

    Observation. Licensing noted an individual who is ordinarily present on the premises has an expired criminal record check. The manager will need to submit a plan to licensing immediately.

    Corrective action. Please ensure persons over the age of 12 who are ordinarily present have a valid criminal record check on file.
