  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - The playpen mattresses appear dirty and soiled - There was a rip in the mesh on one playpen - The walls and chairs appear stained, dirty, the walls were in disrepair.

    Corrective action. Ensure the facility, furniture, equipment and fixtures are clean and in good repair.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - Blind cords hanging in a window in the nap room next to a playpen. The cords were longer and could be reached by a child. - Water beads were in a bin and the licensee said they are used for sensory play. This item is not recommended for children's use and the licensee said she will no longer provide them to children. - The gate latch was broken, not secures and lead to the road. - Additional mattresses are being placed in the playpens for children to sleep on. One of the mattresses was too long and would not allow for a safe sleep surface.

    Corrective action. Ensure blind cords are not accessible to children. Ensure the gate latch is secured. Ensure the manufacturers instructions are followed for safe sleep.

  • HYGIENE AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene.

    Observation. Upon inspection, the nap beds with children's bedding on them were stacked together in a closet in the nap room.

    Corrective action. The licensee said she will have them stored separately.

    Observation. Upon inspection, the emergency evacuation drill was not documented. The licensee said she believes it was conducted and will note the date of the drill moving forward.

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. There were not sufficient emergency food, water and supplies to support the number of children registered. It was also not clear when the fire extinguisher had been serviced.

    Corrective action. Ensure there is adequate emergency supplies to respond to an emergency and that the fire extinguisher is serviced annually

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (h) any special instruction respecting the child's diet, medication, participation in a program of activities, or other matter relevant to the child's care, (i) given by the child's parent to the licensee in writing.

    Observation. Upon inspection, licensing observed the following: - A medication on site for a child and there was no medication form. The licensee said she did not know she needed one for this medication and will now obtain one. - There were no written instructions for a child who has a sun allergy. The licensee said she will create a plan with the parents.

    Observation. The manager's file was not on site. The licensee said the manager is on vacation and she removed it.

    Corrective action. Ensure all records are on site and available.

    Observation. Upon inspection, the staff did not know where the emergency evacuation equipment was located.

    Corrective action. Ensure all staff are trained and aware of the location of equipment.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that children do not have access to any object or substance that may be hazardous to the health or safety of a child.

    Observation. During the inspection the following was observed: - turf fertilizer on the side of the house. - three used diapers in plastic bags were discarded on the side of the house near a door with access to the garage. - caulking tool was on a shelf near the side of the house. Licensee said that they re doing some renovation to the garage and that's why the items were on the side of the house. - Bleach/ammonia solution was stored under the sink in the play area. The cupboard was unlocked at the time of the inspection.

    Corrective action. Ensure children do not have access to any hazardous objects or substances.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. Upon inspecting the outdoor facility it was noted that the fence was leaning inwards, towards the play area of the facility. One plank was missing and it was found to be on the ground. It was observed that two of the supporting poles were rotted at the bottom, causing the fence to fall. The licensee said that fence has been damaged due to the recent snow fall.

    Corrective action. Please ensure the fence is repaired or replaced.
