  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. Licensing observed the following: - no or limited shade in the front playground in the morning. The Manager said they used to have an umbrella but it disappeared. - Garbage in the infant toddler playground - 2 TVs located on tables not secured with the potential to fall on children. - some rooms have paint chipping with drywall exposed on the walls.

    Corrective action. Ensure that children have suitable access to shade when outside, TVs are secured and not able to tip, and that the facility is in good conditions to promote healthy and safe environment.

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (b) readily accessible to employees.

    Observation. Two classrooms did not have medication was not readily accessible to employees and employees were unsure where it is stored. .

    Corrective action. Ensure that medication is readily available

    Observation. Two classrooms with children who require medications did not have a trained employee was not available to administer medication as per the care plan or record.

    Corrective action. Ensure that at all times an employee is available to administer the child's medication.

The following items were identified and reviewed with the facility manager at the time of the inspection; - loose turf on the older outdoor playground - ground tile missing on the older outdoor playground - two carpets with rolled edges in two separate classrooms - one broken toilet seat and one broken toilet lid - one table with several large cuts on the top All items pose a risk to the health and safety of the children present.

    A licensee must ensure that all indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment accessible to children are (b) safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    Observation. The following items were observed and reviewed with the manager at the time of the inspection; - diaper change mats appear to show signs of wear and tear - outdoor toys and equipment require cleaning and maintenance - damaged bathroom cupboard doors - soiled chairs in the classrooms and washroom - two carpets in the facility ripped posing a tripping hazard to children playing in the area - garbage can not being emptied - broken closet doors in the gross motor room posing a risk to the children playing in the area

    Corrective action. Ensure all indoor and outdoor play materials accessible to children are safely constructed, free from hazards and in good repair.

    A licensee must ensure that the entire outdoor play area is (a) enclosed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and will ensure that children are free of harm.

    Observation. Two playgrounds were reviewed during the inspection. One area was pointed out to the manager as having a safety concern with a large gap under the fence. The larger outdoor play area fence was identified a requiring some attention and not sturdy. An internal gate was also damaged posing a risk to the children playing in the area. The LO reviewed all of these items with the manager at the time of the inspection.

    Corrective action. Ensure the entire outdoor play area is enclosed in a manner that is age appropriate and free from harm.

    A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (a) of sturdy and safe construction, easy to clean and free from hazards.

    Observation. A toilet seat lid is broken posing a risk to children using this equipment. Several garbage can's had soiled diapers in them but did not have lids available or in use posing a hygiene concern. One change pad appeared worn and ineffective for the use of changing children's diapers. An area on the 3-5 outdoor play area has a broken piece of deck with an exposed screw that poses a risk to the children playing in the area. The LO reviewed all of these items with the manager at the time of the inspection.

    Corrective action. Ensure all equipment, furniture and supplies are sturdy and safely constructed, easy to clean and free from hazards.

    Observation. All programs were reviewed during the inspection. Some toys and equipment have been purchased however the amount of toys and equipment indoors and outdoors do not meet for needs of the number of children enrolled in the program on the day of the inspection. The LO reviewed this with the staff and the manager during the inspection.

    Corrective action. Ensure indoor and outdoor play materials are suitable and enough in quantity for the age and development of the children in care.

Some programs additionally had damaged or missing cabinet doors in the washrooms that have not been fixed. The LO reviewed these items with the manager during the inspection.

    Observation. All programs were reviewed during the inspection. The toys, equipment and play materials were very limited to meet the needs of the number of children in attendance on the day of the inspection. The LO reviewed Schedule E with the manager during the inspection and outlined the requirement for all areas of development to be supported at all times in all of the classrooms. Additional toys and equipment is required in order to be suitable to meets the needs, age and development of the children in care.

    Corrective action. Ensure indoor and outdoor play materials and equipment are suitable and enough in quantity for the age and development of the children in care.

    A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (a) of sturdy and safe construction, easy to clean and free from hazards.

    Observation. Several shelf's and tables in the facility show signs of wear and tear which could result in ineffective cleaning. An outdoor tetter totter that is broken is accessible to children on the outdoor play area. Wooden steps have come loose with some exposed nails on the outdoor play area. Some window flashing has come loose and poses a hazard to the children playing in the area on the outdoor play area. Some weeds and debris were observed on the outdoor play area. The diaper changing pads were either missing or showed signs of wear and tear and are unable to be cleaned properly and require replacement. The LO reviewed these items with the manager during the inspection.

    Corrective action. Ensure furniture, equipment and supplies are sturdy and safely constructed, easy to clean and free from hazards.
