  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must supply equipment, furniture and supplies that are (a) of sturdy and safe construction, easy to clean and free from hazards.

    Observation. The following was observed in the group child care under 36 months program: -One playpen had an additional mattress added (CORRECTED) -One playpen had a mattress secured in a way that posed a strangulation risk -A cord for the camera was within reach of the playpen, posing a strangulation hazard

    Corrective action. The manager removed the additional mattress and said she will review the playpen directions with staff to ensure no additional mats or unsafe items are added. The manager said she will secure the cord of the camera. She said the secured mattress will be redone to ensure it does not pose a risk to the child.

  • POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

    A licensee must: (b) have an emergency plan that sets out procedures to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from any emergency.

    Observation. Emergency food supplies were not sufficient for the number of children in care

    Corrective action. The manager said they will purchase additional food items to add to the supplies in addition to the items the families provide.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTING

    A licensee must keep, for each child requiring extra support, a current care plan showing the following information: (b) the courses of action recommended by health care professionals to address the needs of the child requiring extra support.

    Observation. Two children requiring medical care plans did not include the course of action and permission for medication administration by staff.

    Corrective action. The manager said one care plan is no longer needed and will update the child's file. She said the other care plan will be updated with the family and reviewed with staff.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTING

    A licensee must keep, for each child, a record showing the following information: (c) daily attendance record, indicating for each day whether the child is absent or, if the child is present, the time of arrival and departure.

    Observation. Attendance does not reflect times children are combined at the beginning and end of day.

    Corrective action. The manager said a system will be in place to record which programs the children are in at all times of the day moving forward.

  • STAFFING

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (b) character references in respect of the person.

    Observation. A review of 5 staff files showed 2 files without references and 2 files without confirmation the facility contacted the references

    Corrective action. The manager said they will review all staff files and obtain missing references. The manager said they may call the references and will record the date of contact moving forward.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

    Observation. Upon review of 5 staff files, 1 staff CRC was not site specific.

    Corrective action. The manager said she will follow up to obtain a site specific CRC.

  • STAFFING

    Despite this section, during the half hour before a care program begins and the half hour after a care program ends, a licensee may permit children who would otherwise be grouped in different care programs, and who are arriving at or leaving the community care facility, to be grouped together and supervised other than as required under Schedule E if (a) the care program is described as Multi-Age Child Care, Group Child Care (Under 36 Months), Group Child Care (30 Months to School Age) or Group Child Care (School Age). Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): The group child care 30 months to school age program and multiage program were combined in the outdoor play space.

    Corrective action. The manager said the programs were suppose to use the space at separate times and brought one program back in. The manager said they will ensure they follow the shared playground schedule and not combine during the day outside.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. A sanitizing cleaner spray bottle was located on the change station in the Group Child Care (under 36 months) accessible to children.

    Corrective action. Ensure that the sanitizing cleaner spray bottle is out of reach of children. The staff said they are waiting for a shelf to place above the change table for the sanitizer to be located. The Licensee said that the cleaner will be stored in a locked cupboard below the change table.

  • MEDICATION

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (a) administered to the child in the amount and at the times specified by the child's parent or in the child's record or care plan.

    Observation. A medication was to be given as needed. The permission form did not describe the symptoms when it would be needed.

    Corrective action. Ensure that the medication is given in the amount and at the time or symptoms specified in the record.

    A licensee must ensure that a child's medication is not accessible to any child, except that a child may have access to his or her own medication if (a) the child's parent has instructed the licensee to permit this.

    Observation. A child's backpack containing medication was located in the hallway accessible to children. A first aid back pack containing medication was located on the floor in the Group Child Care (30months- school age) program accessible to children in care.

    Corrective action. Ensure that medication is not accessible to children in care

    Observation. The fire extinguisher has not been serviced annually. It was due for service on 26-Sep-2024

    Corrective action. Ensure that the fire extinguisher is serviced annually. The Licensee will take the fire extinguishers to be serviced after the facility is closed on Friday.

    Observation. Licensing observe the following: > One child had expired medication > There was no medication on-site for 2 children who required it as per their medical care plans.

    Corrective action. Please validate the staff's certificate using the system established by the ECE registry.
