Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): A play pen used for sleeping is in poor condition and wobbles when touched. The Manager said she will remove it from use

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. - Climber has been installed over a hard surface with minimal resilient surfacing and an insufficient fall radius around the climbing structure. The climber is not anchored to the ground. - there is nothing in place to prevent a child from falling into the metal fire place insert - medication is stored in a child's backpack at child level - Foam mats used for napping are covered with garbage bags that have ripped. Tape has been applied to repair the nap mats and can no longer be sanitized.

    Corrective action. -Repair or replace resilient surfacing and provide sufficient fall radius where no toys or other equipment is in place and anchor the climber to prevent tipping. - Ensure the metal fire place has been treated to prevent injury - Store medication out of reach from children - Replace nap mats with sleep equipment that can be sanitized,

    Observation. A criminal record check for a person over the age of 12 who is ordinarily present is not available. Application was submitted for person at the beginning of March when the person moved into the residence

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During inspection the following was observed: - The outside play area it was found to have several broken toys in the general play area - The nap mats are foam material and are covered by garbage bags as a protective cover. Some of the garbage bags have holes and the foam material is exposed and cannot be sanitized after use.

    Corrective action. Ensure there is a plan in place to inspect and replace broken toys. Ensure the nap mats are covered in a material that can protect the foam from contamination and can be sanitized on a daily basis. Repair or replace any nap mats that have holes and cannot be sanitized

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): The washroom did not have any single use towels to dry hands after washing.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. The following was observed during inspection: 1. A steel framed enclosure with a door has been installed over the sandbox to provide shade and protect from neighbouhood pets. The steel framed enclosure presents the following safety issues: - The frame has not been anchored to anything and could be pushed over from the cement planter it was installed on. - The steel frame has moved away from the cement planter and presents a gap where a space for entrapment has been created. - The enclosure is located on a cement platform and with the added wooden ties of the sandbox presents a tripping hazard for younger children. 2. The fence located behind an accessible hedge in the backyard has picked boards with spacing of the boards that present a potential for entrapment. A nail is sticking out in a piece of fencing that presents a risk of injury.

    Corrective action. 1. Ensure the steel framed enclosure is secured and safe for children to use. Discontinue use until the structure can be secured. 2. Ensure the fence is repaired or made inaccessible to children. This area should be made inaccessible until repairs can be completed.

    A licensee must establish a program to instruct children in, and to practise the rules of, health and hygiene.

    Observation. Inspection of the washroom found the following: 1. There was no toilet paper available or paper towels in the holder located in the washroom. The manager described that the children wash hands in the classroom located down the hall from the washroom. 2. The washroom appeared to not have been cleaned or sanitized as there was a strong odor present. 3. The diaper change mat was torn with the foam parts visible.

    Corrective action. 1. Ensure children have access to toilet paper and paper towels in the washroom so that they may wipe and then wash their hands directly after using the toilet and before re-entering the classroom. 2. Replace diaper change mats when they are torn so that they may be sanitized properly. 3. Set up a daily cleaning schedule for sanitization of the washroom

    Observation. 1. During inspection of the inside of the facility it was found that the dryer door located in the kitchen area was not secured with the baby lock. 2. During inspection of the outdoor play area, it was found that construction materials were stored beside the house where the children have access.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the entire outdoor play area is (a) enclosed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and will ensure that children are free of harm.

    Observation. During review of the outdoor play area the following was found: 1. The fence built along the back of the yard is 4 feet high with pickets and is climbable. This fence is also not secured to posts that are stable. The entire fence can be pulled back and fourth easily. 2. There are areas along the back fence where children can climb under, get legs and arms trapped under and between the gaps in the fence slats. 3. A fence built between the shed and side fence is climbable and has pickets 4. The fence in the corner of the North/East section of the yard is climbable.

    Corrective action. Ensure the entire outdoor area is enclosed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of the children and is free from hazards. A safety plan will be required until repairs can be completed.

During review of the facility the following was found: 1. the outside play area had wet boxes in a pile at the side of the playground. 2. the fence in the back right corner of the yard is leaning over and has a few slats that are rotting near the bottom. 3. Items are piled up in the hallway and are accessible to the children in care

    Corrective action. Ensure the facility is clean and in good repair while the children are in attendance

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. During inspection of the nap room, licensing found the following; 1. Sports and camping equipment such as propane cylinders are stored in this room. 2. A piece of sports training equipment was left unsecured, plugged in and accessible to the children still sleeping in the nap room. Although the licensee uses a radio monitor to supervise children still sleeping, the equipment poses a risk to the children. 3. Toilet bowl cleaner was stored under the bathroom sink and was accessible to children.

    Corrective action. Ensure that a safe environment is provided at all times
