- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGEnvironmentNon-critical
The facility, the furniture, equipment, fixtures and supplies are of sturdy and safe construction. They are easy to clean, and are clean and in good repair and free from hazards. [CCLR Sec. 13(2) and Sec. 15(1)(a)]
Observation. Licensing observed the following: - In the Hummingbirds Room, the changing mat located in the washroom has a torn edge. Due to the damaged surface, the mat can no longer be effectively cleaned and sanitized, creating a potential health and hygiene concern. - All rugs and carpets in the Hummingbirds Room and Chipmunks Room were observed to be stained and soiled. The rugs and carpets require thorough cleaning and sanitization to ensure they are maintained in a clean and hygienic condition. - A piece of the soft-form children's couch in the Hummingbirds Room was observed to have a torn cover. The cover is no longer in good condition and requiring repair or replacement to maintain a safe and hygienic environment. - A rug in the Chipmunks Room was observed to have a curled-up edge. The raised edge creates a potential tripping hazard and requiring to secured or taped down to ensure the safety of children and staff.
- PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGPlay Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical
The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]
Observation. Licensing observed the following: - The stepping stones located adjacent to the fence within the play area were observed to be uneven and no longer securely positioned. The stones have become dislodged due to uneven ground conditions and soil settlement beneath them. In several areas, gaps and depressions have developed over time. As a result, the stepping stones are shifting and moving out of place, creating a potential tripping hazard for children and staff. - The lawn surface in the Chipmunks outdoor play space has deteriorated, and the grass has died, leaving areas of exposed dry soil. An outdoor mat is currently being used to cover a portion of the affected area. During a discussion with the Manager, concerns were raised that the existing surfacing no longer provides adequate fall protection and may not be suitable for varying weather conditions. During rainy periods, the area may become muddy and slippery, and in colder temperatures, the ground surface may become frosty or develop black ice. These conditions present a potential health and safety risk to children in care and should be addressed to ensure the outdoor play area remains safe and suitable for use. - The lawn surface in the Hummingbirds outdoor play space was observed to have some areas of deterioration. At the time of inspection, the area appeared safe for use by children. However, it is recommended that the program continue to monitor the condition of the surface and promptly address any further deterioration to ensure the ongoing health and safety of children in care.
