  • NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICESNutritionNon-critical

Healthy eating and nutritional habits are promoted. [CCLR Sec.48(1)(b)]

Observation. LO observed children's food sitting on the kitchen counter, it is important that all food is handled, stored, and served in a safe manner to protect children from foodborne illness. This is especially important in child care settings, where young children are more susceptible to becoming seriously ill from unsafe food. In practice, this means that: -Perishable foods should be placed in a refrigerator at 4°C or below within 2 hours of preparation or serving. [bccdc.ca], [healthlinkbc.ca] -Leftovers that have been sitting out for more than 2 hours should be discarded. [healthlinkbc.ca], [healthlinkbc.ca]

  • PHYSICAL, EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGPlay Area, Materials and EquipmentNon-critical

The entire outdoor play area is enclosed and constructed in a manner that is suitable for the age and development of children, and ensures that children are free of harm. [CCLR Sec. 16(3)(a)(b)]

Observation. LO observed that there is part of the fence (wooden) with exposed nails from the other side. While children may not be playing in this area, if they trip near the edge, they could fall into the fence.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTINGRecords For Each ChildNon-critical

The licensee keeps a current record for each child showing the information required. [CCLR Sec. 57]

Observation. Emergency cards, attendance, log book and children's files were reviewed. The following items were missing from some children - start date / immunization status / emergency contact in addition to parent. LO also observed manager outside the facility upon arrival. As she turned to return to the facility, she reviewed attendance and added children who were not signed in by parent. LO also observed that the previous attendance and documentation in the log book did not match and therefore attendance records were not accurate on numerous days. The attendance for today was corrected during inspection (CDI)

  • STAFFINGCharacter and skill requirementsNon-critical

Prior to employing staff the manager has met with each person and has obtained the appropriate documentation. [CCLR Sec. 19(1)]

Observation. Three staff files were reviewed, one is missing validation of their updated ECE Certificate, and one is missing immunization status.

  • RECORDS AND REPORTINGCare PlansNon-critical

For each child requiring extra support, the licensee keeps a current care plan showing the required information. [CCLR Sec. 58(1)(2)]

Observation. There are two children who have an allergy noted in their files. Staff stated that only one of them has any allergy. If a child has an allergy noted it must be taken seriously. If there is no need for staff to do anything, have the parent note that in the file. It is always concerning to have information on a file that staff are not aware of. It is also important to note that there is no additional information available for this child's allergy. While there is a note at the front door stating a single food that is not available, the file lists additional foods that this child cannot have. Many people may not be aware of the link between these foods and the risks to the child(ren). Also, all staff should be reviewing children's files to ensure any information shared by parent is accurate and staff are fully knowledgeable in all areas of children's care. Some areas to think about include - what each child cannot have, what is the plan if staff see that food in a child's meal, what are the symptoms to look for, and what do staff do if there are symptoms. Remember, there may be subs or different staff on site and a detailed care plan should be known by all staff.
