  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that each piece of furniture or equipment for sleeping (b) is clean and comfortable.

    Observation. Bedding for children in 3 classrooms were stored in contact.

    Corrective action. The manager said they remove the sheets and bedding daily and sanitize the cots, placing the sheets in a separate storage, and will now wait until the beds are being placed on the floor for nap time before placing the bedding on, to prevent them being stored in contact.

  • MEDICATION

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (a) administered to the child in the amount and at the times specified by the child's parent or in the child's record or care plan.

    Observation. Medication administration form giving permission to provide emergency medication had not been completed for one child in care.

    Corrective action. The manager will review and have the form completed

    Without limiting subsection (1), a licensee must ensure that (b) the ratio of employees to children attending a community care facility is no less than that permitted in Schedule E. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): In the JK 1B Classroom there were no IT staff working which did not meet CCLR schedule E requirements. .

    Corrective action. The manager moved staff to accommodate ratios during the inspection.

    Observation. Licensing reviewed 3 care plans, of those one care plan had not been reviewed within the past year with the parent or any person requested by the parent.

    Corrective action. The manager said they will review the care plan with the parent today.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility as (a) an educator or an assistant unless the person holds a certificate issued under Division 2 [Employee Qualifications], which must be verified by the system maintained by the early childhood educator registry. (Educator or assistant certificate validation) Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): 24 employee files were reviewed of those, certificate validation for 3 employees had not been completed.

    Corrective action. This was corrected during the inspection.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that each piece of furniture or equipment for sleeping (b) is clean and comfortable.

    Observation. In two of the GCC(30m-SAC) classrooms, licensing observed children's cots standing, leaning against one another, where bedding was touching. In one room the pillows for two children were laying across several children's beds where the sheets were in contact with the pillow. Bedding is sent home to be washed once per week.

    Corrective action. The manager will develop a system for storage of bedding where it is not in contact, and provide a written response to licensing.

  • HYGIENE AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

    A licensee, other than a licensee who provides a care program described as either Preschool (30 Months to School Age) or Group Child Care (School Age), must have in a community care facility a sturdy surface for changing diapers, located outside the food preparation area, next to (a) a covered container for soiled clothing.

    Observation. Two of the GCC(30m-SAC) classrooms had no sturdy change surface for changing diapers.

    Corrective action. The manager said they did have some but they must have moved.

    Observation. Certificates for 2 staff were not posted.

    Corrective action. The manager will ensure the certificates are posted for two new staff persons.

    If a licensee has agreed with a parent to give a child any medication prescribed by a medical practitioner or provided by the parent, the licensee and his or her employees must ensure that the medication is (b) readily accessible to employees.

    Observation. Medication for one child was expired.

    Corrective action. The manager said they will connect with the parent and replace the medication with medication that is not expired.

    The licensee must (b) review the care plan at least once each year with a parent of the child requiring extra support and any person requested by the parent.

    Observation. Licensing reviewed 6 care plans, of those, one care plan had not been developed with a parent, and one had not been reviewed in the last year.

    Corrective action. The manager will review and develop a plan to ensure all care plans meet requirements, and will provide the plan to licensing.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (f) evidence that the person has complied with the Province's immunization and tuberculosis control programs. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): 12 staff records were reviewed, of those 2 staff's files did not have evidence that the person has complied with the Province's Immunization control program.

    A licensee must not employ a person in a community care facility unless the licensee or, in the case of a person who is not the manager, the manager has first met with the person and obtained all of the following: (a) a criminal record check for the person.

    Observation. 12 staff files were reviewed, of those, one staff's file, who had been working since July, did not contain a criminal record check completed by the Criminal record review program, however they did have an RCMP clearance. The manager said they will apply for a CRC today.

    Corrective action. The manager will consider a provide a plan for compliance.

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. -Walls in multiple classrooms had small areas of damage exposing dryall to children while playing. -The outdoor play area were observed to have two gates with broken latched, one fence with a broken spindle, one broken fence cap with an exposed screw, and one fence panel was broken from the structure, exposing a screw. -Nap area window coverings to block light in two under three nap rooms, were torn in multiple spots.

    Corrective action. Please establish systems to ensure that the community facility and the furniture equipment and fixtures within are clean and in good repair.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    Observation. During the inspection licensing observed: -In two classrooms there were unlabelled bottles of cleaner. One cleaning bottle, which was identified for sanitizing the diaper change table was empty. -In two group child care (30 months to SAC) classrooms there was no sturdy change surface available near a basin for washing hands. Both classrooms had children who require diaper changes. -One classroom had two areas on the wall with visible damage accessible to children in care. -The outdoor play area had no shade or shelter available at the time of the inspection. The manager said they did have sails up for the summer, however they had been removed for the winter.

    Corrective action. Please ensure that the community care facility and the furniture, equipment and fixtures within it are clean and in good repair while children are in attendance.

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees. Observation (CORRECTED DURING INSPECTION): During the inspection licensing observed; -One classroom had a drying rack stored on the window sill next to a toilet. This was not secured and could easily fall onto a child, and storage of a plunger stored accessible to children. These were corrected during inspection.

  • EQUIPMENT AND FURNISHINGS

    A licensee must ensure that a healthy and safe environment is provided at all times while children are under the supervision of employees.

    Observation. -During inspection licensing observed the lights were out in the stairway used by the children in care to access the rooftop playground. It was dark in the stairs. This poses a concern for evacuation purposes. -During inspection licensing observed a leak from the ceiling in Classroom #7. The leak occured on day that the facility was closed. Facility had not informed licensing of the leak. The room is not currently in use, however, the room will not be available for use until the repair work is complete.

    Corrective action. Please ensure to provide a healthy and safe environment.
